Let's get ready for the Unit 3 Test — together.
This is practice, not a test. It covers every skill on the Unit 3 Test with new numbers and new stories, so your student can try things out at home with you beside them. Start with the Family Note, then work through the five review parts. You get two tries on each question, and hints are always available. Finish with My Results so you know what to study before test day.

Read this first. It explains what the Unit 3 Test covers and how to help without doing the math for your student.
Thank you for doing this with your student. Here is what to expect. Gracias por acompañar a su estudiante. Esto es lo que pueden esperar.
Unit 3 is about ratios and rates: comparing two amounts, finding the amount for one (a unit rate), using tables and graphs to find equivalent ratios, and converting between units like feet and yards. Every question in this review practices a skill that is on the test. The numbers and stories are new, so this is real practice, not a copy of the test.
You do not need to know the math to help. If a part feels hard, that is useful — it tells you what to practice together before test day, and it is a good thing to tell me about. The My Results tab lists exactly which parts still need work.
👀 What to listen forQué escuchar
- “Which amount is named first?” The order of a ratio is part of the answer. «¿Qué cantidad se nombra primero?» El orden de una razón es fundamental.
- Equivalent ratios multiply both parts by the same number. Adding the same number is the most common mistake.
- “Per” means “for each one.” A unit rate always has a 1 in the bottom amount. «Por» significa «por cada uno». Una tasa unitaria siempre compara con exactamente 1.
- A bigger package is not automatically the better buy. Always compare unit prices.
- Changing to a bigger unit gives a smaller number (1,800 feet = 600 yards).
🤝 How to helpCómo ayudar
- Let your student set up the problem first, before you say anything.
- Ask “How did you get that?” and “Does that answer make sense?” Pregunte: «¿Cómo obtuviste eso?» y «¿Tiene sentido esa respuesta?».
- If stuck, tap the Family Coach button or Hint instead of giving the answer.
- You do not need to know the math. Listening to the explanation is the whole job.
- Two short 10-minute sessions work better than one long one. Stopping on a win is great.
The ratio ___ : ___ means for every ___, there are ___. La razón ___ : ___ significa que por cada ___, hay ___.
The unit rate is ___ per 1 ___. La tasa unitaria es ___ por cada 1 ___.
I multiplied both parts by ___, so ___. Multipliqué ambas partes por ___, así que ___.
These rates are / are not equivalent because ___. Estas tasas son / no son equivalentes porque ___.
___ is the better buy because its unit price is lower.
Pick up any package that shows a price and an amount (a bag of rice, a box of granola bars, a bottle of juice). Ask your student: what does one pound, one bar, or one ounce cost? Then pick something you do every day — walking to the bus, reading a few pages — and ask: how long does it take for one? That is a unit rate.
Write ratios in the right order, simplify them, explain what they mean, and use a tape diagram to find a missing amount.
A question a family member can ask: “Which number comes first, and why does that matter?”
Part 2 · Unit Rates & Unit Prices Parte 2 · Tasas unitarias y precios unitarios
A unit rate is the amount for exactly 1. Divide the top by the bottom so the bottom becomes 1. Compare unit prices to find the better buy.
A question a family member can ask: “What does one of these cost? How do you know?”
Fill in ratio tables by multiplying both rows by the same number, plot equivalent ratios on a graph, and use ordered pairs to compare.
| Rice (cups)Arroz (tazas) | 3 | 6 | 9 | 12 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beans (cups)Frijoles (tazas) | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 |
A question a family member can ask: “What did you multiply by to get the next column?”
Find the unit rate first, then use it to answer the question. Two rates are equivalent when they have the same unit rate.
A question a family member can ask: “What is the amount for just one? What do you do with it next?”
Use a conversion rate like a unit rate. Going to a bigger unit, the number gets smaller (divide). Going to a smaller unit, the number gets bigger (multiply).
(1 pie = 12 pulg)
(1 yarda = 3 pies)
(1 milla = 5,280 pies)
(1 libra = 16 onzas)
(1 kg ≈ 2.2 libras)
(1 galón = 4 cuartos)
A question a family member can ask: “Is the new unit bigger or smaller? So will the number go up or down?”
