Let's get ready for the Unit 4 Test — together.

Practice, not a test. New numbers, new stories, and a hint on every question.

Thank you for doing this with your student. Here is what to expect.Gracias por acompañar a su estudiante. Esto es lo que pueden esperar.

Unit 4 is about percents: a percent is a ratio out of 100. Students read percent tape diagrams, move between fractions, decimals and percents, find a percent of a number, and work backward to find the whole. The test also asks them to explain their thinking with a table, a tape diagram, or a double number line.

You do not need to know the math to help. If a part feels hard, that is useful — it tells you what to practice together before test day, and it is a good thing to tell me about.

Part 1Parte 1 Percent sense & tape diagramsSentido del porcentaje y cinta 100% split into 4 equal boxes: each box is 25%, so 3 boxes are 75%. 17 out of 20 is 85 out of 100 = 85%.100% dividido en 4 cajas iguales: cada caja es 25%, así que 3 cajas son 75%. 17 de 20 es 85 de 100 = 85%.
Part 2Parte 2 Percent of a numberPorcentaje de un número Build from 10%: 10% of 380 is 38, so 30% is 114. Or use the decimal: 45% of 140 = 0.45 × 140 = 63.Construya desde el 10%: el 10% de 380 es 38, así que 30% es 114. O use el decimal: 45% de 140 = 0.45 × 140 = 63.
Part 3Parte 3 Find the wholeHallar el entero If 8% is 12, then 1% is 12 ÷ 8 = 1.5, and 100% is 150. The whole is bigger than the part, so we divide.
Parts 4 & 5Partes 4 y 5 Combine, compare, estimate & explainCombinar, comparar, estimar y explicar Add the goals and the shots first, then find the percent — do not average two percents. Use benchmarks (50%, 10%, 25%) to check an estimate.
👀 What to listen forQué escuchar
  • “Percent” means “out of 100.” 85% = 85 out of 100.«Por ciento» significa «de cada 100». 85% = 85 de cada 100.
  • A percent over 100% means MORE than the original amount (250% = 2.5 times).Un porcentaje mayor que 100% significa MÁS que la cantidad original (250% = 2.5 veces).
  • Percent of a number: the answer is smaller than the number when the percent is under 100%.Porcentaje de un número: la respuesta es menor que el número cuando el porcentaje es menor que 100%.
  • To find the whole, divide the part by the percent. The whole is bigger than the part.
  • Do not average percents from groups of different sizes. Combine the counts first. No promedie porcentajes de grupos de distinto tamaño. Combine primero las cantidades.
🤝 How to helpCómo ayudar
  • Let your student set up the problem first, before you say anything.
  • Ask “How did you get that?” and “Does that answer make sense?”Pregunte: «¿Cómo obtuviste eso?» y «¿Tiene sentido esa respuesta?».
  • If stuck, tap the Family Coach button or Hint instead of giving the answer.
  • You do not need to know the math. Listening to the explanation is the whole job.
  • Two short 10-minute sessions work better than one long one. Stopping on a win is great.

Find a real percent at home.Encuentren un porcentaje real en casa.

Look for a percent in your home: a sale tag, a phone battery, a nutrition label, a restaurant bill. Ask your student: what does this percent mean, and about how much is it in real numbers? (A $40 shirt that is 25% off? Unos $10 menos.)

1. Percent Sense (Sentido del porcentaje)

Percent = out of 100. 17 out of 20 = 85 out of 100 = 85%.

Equivalent forms: 38% = 38/100 = 19/50 = 0.38. Over 100%: 250% = 2.5 times.

Tape diagram: 100% ÷ number of boxes = percent per box.

2. Percent of a Number (% de un número)

• 10% → divide by 10   • 50% → half   • 25% → a fourth

• Build it: 45% of 140 = 40% (56) + 5% (7) = 63.

• Or use the decimal: 0.45 × 140 = 63.

3. Find the Whole (Hallar el entero)

Part ÷ percent (as a decimal). The whole is bigger than the part.

• 8% of ? = 12 → 1% = 12 ÷ 8 = 1.5 → 100% = 150.

• 600% of ? = 144 → 144 ÷ 6 = 24.

Combine data first: (9 + 21) ÷ (10 + 30) = 75%. Never average percents.

4. Four Questions to Ask at Home

  • “Is this number the part or the whole?”
  • “What is 10% (or 50%) of the whole? Can we build from that?”
  • “Does the answer make sense — bigger or smaller than where we started?”
  • “Can you explain it with a table or a tape diagram?”
