Unit 10: Math Is Synthesis Lesson 10-4 MPP.4

Math is Ingenuity

Las matemáticas son ingenio

I can use ratios and models to explain how the Penny Farthing and gear-driven bicycles were ingenious solutions to a real problem.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain a gear ratio using the words rotation, teeth, and 'for each ___, the wheel turns ___.'

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we use ratios to explain how bicycle gears work — why one turn of the pedals can spin the wheel more than once.

A gear ratio compares teeth to teeth. Divide the pedal gear's teeth by the wheel gear's teeth to find how many wheel turns you get per pedal turn.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

This skill supports everyday problem solving with money, measurements, games, planning, and checking whether an answer is reasonable.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: the pedal gear has 48 teeth and the rear wheel gear has 32 teeth.

One full turn of the pedals pulls 48 teeth of chain.

The rear gear needs 32 teeth for one full turn, so divide: 48 ÷ 32 = 1.5.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • How many teeth does each gear have?
  • What happens with one full turn of the pedals?

Watch for: Listen for "ratio" (razón) and "equivalent ratios" (razones equivalentes) — 48 : 32 and 3 : 2 mean the same thing.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

ingenuity ingenio

Coming up with different, and sometimes unique, solutions to problems.

Idear soluciones diferentes, y a veces únicas, a los problemas.

rotation rotación

One full turn of a wheel, gear, or pedal all the way around.

gear engranaje

A toothed wheel that passes motion to another toothed wheel through a chain.

A comparison of two quantities, like pedal rotations to wheel rotations.

equivalent ratios razones equivalentes

Ratios that make the same comparison using different numbers.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

A bike has a 44-tooth pedal gear and a 22-tooth rear gear.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Write the gear ratio.
    Escriban la razón de engranajes.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    44 : 22
    44 : 22
  2. Simplify it.
    Simplifíquenla.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    Divide both by 22: 2 : 1.
    Dividan ambos entre 22: 2 : 1.
  3. Say what it means for riding.
Digan qué significa al andar en bicicleta.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
The wheel turns twice for every one pedal turn.
