Unit 6: Expressions Lesson 6-12 6.NOS.4

Least Common Multiple

Mínimo común múltiplo

I can find the least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers by listing or comparing their multiples.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain how I found the LCM using the words multiple, common multiple, skip counting, and least common multiple.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we find the least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers. It is the smallest number that both numbers go into.

A multiple is what you get when you count by a number: 4, 8, 12. The LCM is the first number that shows up in both numbers' lists.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

This skill supports everyday problem solving with money, measurements, games, planning, and checking whether an answer is reasonable.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: we want the LCM of 4 and 6. Skip count the multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24.

Ejemplo real: queremos el mcm de 4 y 6. Cuenta salteado los múltiplos de 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24.

Now skip count the multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24.

Ahora cuenta salteado los múltiplos de 6: 6, 12, 18, 24.

Look for the first number in BOTH lists. 12 is in both, and it comes before 24.

Two astronauts start checks at the same time. Find the LCM of 3 and 5 to see when their schedules line up again.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Skip count the multiples of 3 up to 15. What are they?
Cuenten salteado los múltiplos de 3 hasta 15. ¿Cuáles son?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    3, 6, 9, 12, 15 — add 3 each time.
    3, 6, 9, 12, 15 — sumen 3 cada vez.
  2. Now skip count the multiples of 5 up to 15. What are they?
Ahora cuenten salteado los múltiplos de 5 hasta 15. ¿Cuáles son?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    5, 10, 15 — add 5 each time.
    5, 10, 15 — sumen 5 cada vez.
  3. Which number is the FIRST one in both lists? That is the LCM.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
15 is the first shared number, so the LCM of 3 and 5 is 15.
