Our goal: I can find applications of math outside of school — in professions like being a chef, in hobbies like gardening, and around my own house, explain why the method works, and use it on a problem I have not seen before.
The big idea: People use math every day in their professions and their hobbies — and it is a good tool for solving problems around your house, too — and you can say why it is true, and where it would stop being true.
Model to copy — Watch me find the math in a chef's day
- When chefs plan menus, they determine the number of items on the menu and calculate the price point for each item.
- They decide on the portion size of each item and project how much food is needed for each day.
- They calculate how much of each ingredient to order — that is counting, measuring, and multiplying, all before a single dish is cooked.

Try it together — then prove it: A planter that is 4 feet long and 2 feet wide has an area of 4 × 2 = 8 square feet — that tells us how many plants fit. If the soil needs to be 1 foot deep, the volume is 4 × 2 × 1 = 8 cubic feet — that tells us how much soil to buy. Gardeners also measure seed depth and the distance between seeds.
