Multiply Decimals

Pick up where we left off

Where we left off

Our goal: With my small group, I can multiply decimals and place the decimal point correctly in the product — one step at a time, with support.

The big idea: Multiply like whole numbers, then the product has the SAME total of decimal places as both factors combined.

Model to copy — Watch me

  1. I want 4.5 × 12.60, the cost of 4.5 meters at $12.60 each.
  2. First I multiply without points, like whole numbers: 45 × 1260 = 56,700.
  3. Now I count decimal places: 4.5 has 1, and 12.60 has 2, so 1 + 2 = 3 decimal places.
  4. I put the point 3 places from the right in 56,700: that gives 56.700, or $56.70.
  5. I check with an estimate: 5 × $13 = $65, and $56.70 is close, so my answer is reasonable.

You did these with your group. Now do them on your own — the model above is yours to copy.

  1. 1

Same stepsFinish what the group started. Use the model above, step for step.

    Let's try together: Let's multiply 0.4 × 0.7. First multiply like whole numbers: what is 4 × 7? (28.) Now count decimal places: 0.4 has 1 and 0.7 has 1, so that is 2 places total. Put the point 2 places from the right in 28: 0.28. So 0.4 × 0.7 = 0.28.

My first step is ___ , because the problem asks for ___ .

You answered these out loud. Now write them.

Answer, then say how you know — the reason is the part that counts.

    1. A$23.80
    2. B$21.80
    3. C$238.00
    4. D$2.38

    Why is that the answer?

    How do you know?

    I chose ___ because ___ .

  3. 7

Think it throughA student answered $238.00. What went wrong?

    1. AThey put the decimal point in the wrong place
    2. BThey added instead of multiplying
    3. CThey rounded too early
    4. DThey used the wrong price

    Explain your thinking.

    I chose ___ because ___ .

  4. 8

Back to the modelHow did estimating by rounding help you sort the products? How do you decide where to place the decimal in the exact product?

    I estimated ___ x ___ by rounding to ___ x ___ = ___, which told me the product is ___ than 20.

Find the mistakeAnother student made this exact mistake in this lesson. Explain why it is wrong, then write what they should have done.

The mistake: A common mistake in Multiply Decimals is counting decimal places from only one factor instead of adding the decimal places from BOTH factors.

I can…Not yetGetting thereGot it
I can multiply decimals and place the decimal point correctly in the product — one step at a time, with support.
I can explain why it works: Multiply like whole numbers, then the product has the SAME total of decimal places as both factors combined.
I can talk through each step out loud using a sentence frame and the lesson's key words.
