Get Ready: Describe Data Using the Mean

The mean is a fair share: add all the values, then divide by how many there are. In this lesson you also work backward to find a missing score. So warm up four skills: adding a list, dividing a total into equal shares, multiplying to find a total, and subtracting to find what is missing.

Fair share: total ÷ how many Reparto justo: total ÷ cuántos hay

To share fairly, first add all the values to get the total. Then divide the total by how many values there are. You can also work backward: if you know the total you need and what you have, subtract to find what is missing.

Fair share: 3 friends have 2, 4, and 6 stickers. Total = 2 + 4 + 6 = 12. Share equally: 12 ÷ 3 = 4 each. Reparto justo: 3 amigos tienen 2, 4 y 6 calcomanías. Total = 2 + 4 + 6 = 12. Repartido en partes iguales: 12 ÷ 3 = 4 cada uno.
What is missing: You need 20 points in all and you have 13. You still need 20 − 13 = 7.

Your quick check picks one for you, but you can switch any time:

Level 0 Add, then share. Suma y luego reparte.

A. Add: 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = ___ A. Suma: 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = ___

Hint · Pista

4 + 6 = 10, 10 + 8 = 18, 18 + 10 = 28. 4 + 6 = 10, 10 + 8 = 18, 18 + 10 = 28.

B. Share 28 equally into 4 groups. 28 ÷ 4 = ___ B. Reparte 28 en partes iguales en 4 grupos. 28 ÷ 4 = ___

Hint · Pista

4 × 7 = 28, so 28 ÷ 4 = 7. 4 × 7 = 28, así que 28 ÷ 4 = 7.

C. Add: 3 + 5 + 7 = ___ C. Suma: 3 + 5 + 7 = ___

Hint · Pista

3 + 5 = 8, then 8 + 7 = 15. 3 + 5 = 8, luego 8 + 7 = 15.

D. You need 10 points and you have 6. How many more do you need? D. Necesitas 10 puntos y tienes 6. ¿Cuántos más necesitas?

Hint · Pista

10 − 6 = 4. 10 − 6 = 4.

Level 1 Find totals and missing parts. Halla totales y partes que faltan.

A. Add: 12 + 20 + 16 + 11 = ___ A. Suma: 12 + 20 + 16 + 11 = ___

Hint · Pista

12 + 20 = 32, 32 + 16 = 48, 48 + 11 = 59. 12 + 20 = 32, 32 + 16 = 48, 48 + 11 = 59.

B. A total of 35 is shared equally by 5 people. How much does each person get?

Hint · Pista

35 ÷ 5 = 7. 35 ÷ 5 = 7.

C. To average 15 points over 10 games, you need 15 × 10 points in all. What is that total?

Hint · Pista

15 × 10 = 150. 15 × 10 = 150.

D. Which shows how to share a total of 35 equally among 5 people?

Hint · Pista

Sharing equally means dividing: 35 ÷ 5. Repartir en partes iguales significa dividir: 35 ÷ 5.

Level 2 Work backward from a total.

A. Add: 17 + 14 + 15 + 10 + 18 = ___ A. Suma: 17 + 14 + 15 + 10 + 18 = ___

Hint · Pista

17 + 14 = 31, 31 + 15 = 46, 46 + 10 = 56, 56 + 18 = 74. 17 + 14 = 31, 31 + 15 = 46, 46 + 10 = 56, 56 + 18 = 74.

B. You need 150 points in all. You have 133. How many more points do you need? B. Necesitas 150 puntos en total. Tienes 133. ¿Cuántos puntos más necesitas?

Hint · Pista

150 − 133 = 17. 150 − 133 = 17.

C. How far below 15 is 11? C. ¿A cuánto está 11 por debajo de 15?

Hint · Pista

15 − 11 = 4. 15 − 11 = 4.

Hint · Pista

24 ÷ 3 = 8. 24 ÷ 3 = 8.

2. Add: 5 + 9 + 6 + 8 = ___ 2. Suma: 5 + 9 + 6 + 8 = ___

Hint · Pista

5 + 9 = 14, 14 + 6 = 20, 20 + 8 = 28. 5 + 9 = 14, 14 + 6 = 20, 20 + 8 = 28.
