Learning target I can write a comparison as a fraction, divide to find the unit rate, and use the unit rates to decide which option is the better value.

Start hereWords for this lesson

Read each word before you begin. Say it out loud.

WordWhat it meansExample
Rates and Unit RatesSpanish: Tasas y tasas unitarias A rate compares different units; a unit rate compares a quantity to 1 unit. 180 miles in 3 hours = 60 miles per 1 hour.
RateSpanish: Tasa A ratio comparing two amounts with different units, like miles per hour. $12 for 4 games is a rate
Unit RateSpanish: Tasa unitaria A rate for just 1 of something, like cost for 1 item. $3 per 1 game
PerSpanish: Por For each one. Example: 5 dollars per book. 60 miles per hour means 60 miles for every 1 hour
RatioSpanish: Razón A way to compare two amounts, like 3 to 2. 5 to 3 or 5:3
Unit priceSpanish: Precio unitario A unit rate that gives the cost of exactly 1 item, like $0.60 per game. $3 for 5 games → $0.60 per 1 game

Watch outA common mistake

Two essential things to watch: First, always divide Top by Bottom (Cost ÷ Amount) so you find dollars per item. If you flip it upside down (3 ÷ 15), you find items per dollar instead. Second, the rate is originally over 1 (5/1 = $5 for 1 ticket), but we do NOT keep the 1 in everyday writing — we drop the 1 and write '$5 per ticket'. Finally, never decide from the total price alone: $15 for 3 tickets is $5 each, while $20 for 5 tickets is $4 each, making $20 the better value.

Part 1Understand the idea
  1. 1Complete the table. Show how you found each value.

Movie tickets. Theater A sells 3 tickets for $15. Theater B sells 5 tickets for $20. Write each ratio as a fraction, then divide to find the unit rate.

OptionTotal CostAmountRatio as a FractionUnit Rate
    Theater A$153 tickets
    Theater B$205 tickets

Hint The fraction is total cost over amount: dollars on top, tickets on the bottom.
