Start hereWords for this lesson

Read each word before you begin. Say it out loud.

WordWhat it meansExample
ReciprocalSpanish: Recíproco A fraction turned upside down.
DividendSpanish: Dividendo The number being divided — it comes first in a division expression.
DivisorSpanish: Divisor The number you divide by — the one you flip in Keep, Change, Flip.
QuotientSpanish: Cociente The answer when you divide.
Mixed numberSpanish: Número mixto A whole number and a fraction together, like 2 1/4.
Unit fractionSpanish: Fracción unitaria A fraction with 1 as its numerator, like 1/4.

Watch outA common mistake

A common mistake is multiplying by the SECOND fraction as written, instead of its reciprocal. If you forget to flip, you get the wrong operation entirely — always check: did I flip the divisor before multiplying?

A robotics team is testing a new track design ahead of a regional competition. Their prototype track measures 5 1/4 feet from start to finish, and the competition rulebook requires the whole track to be built out of straight sections that are each exactly 3/4 foot long, with no leftover length allowed anywhere along the course. Before the team can submit their design for inspection, their captain needs to know exactly how many straight sections make up the full length of the track.
