Write and Evaluate Expressions
Grade 6 Math · 6.EE.2 · 3-Day Substitute Packet
For the Substitute
Thanks for being here today. This packet runs itself — students can work
independently. Here's the plan:
- Hand each student the packet (or this printout).
- Read the day's Worked Example aloud, then have students try the practice.
- Students show their work in the space under each problem.
- The Answer Key is at the back (last page) for you — keep it separate from students.
- If students finish early, they move to the next day's page or the Challenge.
Objective: I can write an expression from words and evaluate it for a given value.

Day 1
Write and Evaluate Expressions · 6.EE.2
Warm-Up
If a number is n, write an expression for '4 more than the number.'
Worked Example
Evaluate 3x + 5 when x = 4.
- Substitute 4 for x: 3(4) + 5.
- Multiply first: 3 × 4 = 12.
- Then add: 12 + 5 = 17.
Answer: 17
Practice — show your work
- Evaluate 2x + 3 when x = 5.
- Evaluate 4a − 1 when a = 3.
- Write an expression for 'the product of 6 and y.'
Day 2
Write and Evaluate Expressions · 6.EE.2
Warm-Up
Look back at yesterday's example before you start.
Worked Example
Write an expression for 'seven more than a number n.'
- 'A number' is n.
- 'Seven more than' means add 7.
- So the expression is n + 7.
Answer: n + 7
Practice — show your work
- Write an expression for '5 less than twice a number n.'
- Evaluate 5(x + 2) when x = 3.
- Evaluate x squared + 4 (x² + 4) when x = 3.
Day 3
Write and Evaluate Expressions · 6.EE.2
Warm-Up
Look back at yesterday's example before you start.
Worked Example
Evaluate 3x + 5 when x = 4.
- Substitute 4 for x: 3(4) + 5.
- Multiply first: 3 × 4 = 12.
- Then add: 12 + 5 = 17.
Answer: 17
Practice — show your work
Use the Challenge on Day 3.
Challenge (Early Finishers)
Write your own word phrase for a classmate, then evaluate it for x = 2.
