Dividing Whole Numbers by Fractions

  1. Name the question: 4 ÷ 1/2 asks how many 1/2s fit in 4
  2. Count with a model: each whole holds 2 halves, so 4 wholes hold 4 × 2 = 8 halves
  3. Shortcut: multiply by the reciprocal of the divisor, 6 ÷ 3/4 = 6 × 4/3 = 8, then check by multiplying: 8 × 3/4 = 6
