Example 1Warm-up

Write 6/8 in simplest form.

  1. Find a number that divides both 6 and 8. Both share the factor 2.
  2. Divide the top: 6 divided by 2 equals 3.
  3. Divide the bottom: 8 divided by 2 equals 4.
  4. Check 3/4: the only common factor of 3 and 4 is 1, so it is done.
Answer: 3/4
Example 2On level

Add 1/3 + 2/5.

  1. The denominators 3 and 5 are different, so find a common denominator. Multiply 3 x 5 = 15.
  2. Rename 1/3: multiply top and bottom by 5 to get 5/15.
  3. Rename 2/5: multiply top and bottom by 3 to get 6/15.
  4. Add the numerators: 5/15 + 6/15 = 11/15. It is already in simplest form.
Answer: 11/15
Example 3Challenge

Divide 3/4 ÷ 2/3.

  1. Keep the first fraction the same: 3/4.
  2. Change divide to multiply and flip the second fraction (its reciprocal): 2/3 becomes 3/2.
  3. Multiply across: 3 x 3 = 9 on top and 4 x 2 = 8 on the bottom, giving 9/8.
  4. Write 9/8 as a mixed number: 9 divided by 8 is 1 with remainder 1, so 1 1/8.
Answer: 1 1/8
