Unit R5 · Pre-Algebra & Geometry Readiness
📐 Pre-Algebra & Geometry Readiness
Five lessons that build the ratio, rate, and geometry foundations that Grade 6 depends on — ratios and equivalent ratios, unit rates and better-buy comparisons, perimeter and area of rectangles, area of triangles and composite shapes, and the coordinate plane with an introduction to integers. Each lesson is tagged to the Grade 6 standard it unlocks.
Five Lessons
Unit R5 Lessons
Work through the lessons in order — each one builds on the last.
📐 Introduction to Ratios
Compare two quantities with a ratio (3:2), understand part-to-part vs part-to-whole, and explore equivalent ratios (1:2 = 2:4).
Lesson 2 · Builds 6.RP.2📐 Rates & Unit Rates
Find unit rates (miles per hour, cost per item) and use them to make better-buy comparisons between two prices.
Lesson 3 · Builds 6.G.1📐 Perimeter & Area of Rectangles
Use P = 2(l + w) and A = l × w to find the perimeter and area of rectangles and solve real-world measurement word problems.
Lesson 4 · Builds 6.G.1📐 Area of Triangles & Composite Shapes
Apply A = ½ × b × h for triangles and find the area of composite figures by decomposing them into rectangles and triangles.
Lesson 5 · Builds 6.NS.6 / 6.NS.5📐 Coordinate Plane & Intro to Integers
Plot points in Quadrant I (across then up), read and place integers on a number line, compare integers, and find absolute value as distance from zero.
For the Teacher
Unit R5 Teacher Notes
Prerequisite: Students should have basic multiplication and division fact fluency before starting Lesson 2 (unit rates). Lessons 3 and 4 require multiplication of whole numbers. Lesson 5 requires number-line reading skills from Unit R1.
Pacing: Each lesson is designed for a 20–30 minute independent session. All five lessons together make a solid one-week unit. The exit ticket in each lesson is a quick formative check — collect student responses before moving on.
Standards alignment: Lessons 1–2 address 6.RP.1 and 6.RP.2 (understand ratio concepts and unit rate language). Lessons 3–4 address 6.G.1 (find area of polygons by composing and decomposing). Lesson 5 bridges to 6.NS.5 and 6.NS.6 (understand positive and negative numbers, plot rational numbers on a coordinate plane).
Pairs with: the Manipulatives Toolkit for hands-on modeling and the Bilingual Vocab Deck for ESOL support.
