Stretch: When Mean and Median Disagree

I can compute the mean and median and explain how an outlier pulls the mean.

🧠 The Challenge

meanmedianoutliersummarize

A measure of center is one number that summarizes a data set. The mean is pulled toward outliers; the median resists them.

👀 Worked Example

Data: 4, 5, 6, 7, 28. Mean = 50 ÷ 5 = 10. Median (middle) = 6. The outlier 28 pulled the mean far above most values.

✏️ Your Turn

0 of 3 checks complete

1. Data 2, 4, 6: what is the mean?

2. Data 3, 5, 7, 9 (ordered): the median is…

3. One huge value is added to a data set. Which moves more?

💬 Explain Your Thinking

Explain why the mean and median can be very different:

"The mean is blank and the median is blank. They differ because blank."
