Describing Data: Middle and Spread

I can find the mean, median, and range of a small data set.

📘 Word Bank + Sentence Frames

mean (average)median (middle)range (spread)order the data

  • Mean = add all values, divide by how many.
  • Median = the middle value when the data is in order.
  • Range = highest − lowest (how spread out the data is).

👀 See It — data: 4, 8, 6, 10, 2

Ordered: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Median = 6 (middle). Mean = (2+4+6+8+10) ÷ 5 = 30 ÷ 5 = 6. Range = 10 − 2 = 8.

✏️ Your Turn

0 of 3 checks complete

1. Data: 3, 5, 7. What is the mean?

2. Data ordered: 2, 4, 9. What is the median?

3. Data: 1, 4, 10. What is the range?

💬 Explain Your Thinking

Explain the difference between mean, median, and range:

"The mean is blank, the median is blank, and the range is blank. Range tells us how blank the data is."
