3.1–3.2 — Understand Ratios & Unit Rates

Write ratios in three forms, identify part-to-part vs. part-to-whole relationships, and calculate unit rates.

Key Ideas

A ratio compares two quantities. It can be written three ways: a : b, a to b, or a/b.

A part-to-part ratio compares one part of a group to another part (e.g., red marbles to blue marbles). A part-to-whole ratio compares one part to the total (e.g., red marbles to all marbles).

A unit rate is a rate with a denominator of 1. Divide to find it.

Ratio example: A bag has 3 red and 4 blue marbles.
Part-to-part: 3 : 4 (red to blue)
Part-to-whole: 3 : 7 (red to total)
Unit rate example: $15 for 3 notebooks
$15 ÷ 3 = $5 per notebook

Practice

A class has 12 boys and 18 girls. What is the ratio of boys to girls in simplest form?

12 : 18
3 : 2
2 : 3

You drive 150 miles in 3 hours. What is the unit rate?

3 miles per hour
50 miles per hour
450 miles per hour

A bag has 5 red and 8 blue marbles. What is the part-to-whole ratio of red marbles to total marbles?

5 : 13
5 : 8
8 : 13

3.3 — Equivalent Ratios

Generate equivalent ratios using multiplication and division, and organize them in ratio tables and double number lines.

Key Ideas

Equivalent ratios are ratios that express the same relationship. Multiply or divide both terms by the same number to find them.

A ratio table organizes equivalent ratios in rows or columns. A double number line shows two quantities lined up at equivalent values.

To check if two ratios are equivalent, simplify both ratios to simplest form or check that both terms are multiplied or divided by the same scale factor.

Example: 4 : 5 → multiply both by 2 → 8 : 10
Check: Divide both terms of 8 : 10 by 2 → 8 ÷ 2 = 4 and 10 ÷ 2 = 5, so 4 : 5 = 8 : 10
Ratio table:
Apples: 2, 4, 6, 8
Oranges: 3, 6, 9, 12
Every pair is equivalent to 2 : 3

Practice

Which ratio is equivalent to 3 : 5?

6 : 8
9 : 15
5 : 3

In a ratio table, if the first row is 4 and 10, what pair comes next when you multiply by 2?

8 and 20
6 and 12
8 and 10

Are 6 : 9 and 10 : 15 equivalent?

No, because 6 : 9 simplifies to 3 : 2
No, because they do not use the same numbers
Yes, because both simplify to 2 : 3

3.4 — Graph Ratio Relationships

Plot equivalent ratios on a coordinate plane, interpret the slope as a unit rate, and connect graphs to tables and equations.

Key Ideas

Each equivalent ratio can be plotted as an ordered pair (x, y) on the coordinate plane. The horizontal axis is x (input) and the vertical axis is y (output).

A graph shows a proportional relationship (equivalent ratios) if and only if:

  • It forms a straight line. (The steepness / rate never changes.)
  • It passes directly through the origin (0, 0). (At 0 hours, you travel 0 miles.)

The point (1, r) reveals the unit rate r. In the equation y = kx, k is the constant of proportionality (unit rate). For every point on the line, y ÷ x = k.

Finding the Unit Rate from Any Point:
Pick any point on the line, like (4, 120). Divide y by x:
120 miles ÷ 4 hours = 30 miles per hour.
Because the ratio is equivalent everywhere, 30 ÷ 1 = 60 ÷ 2 = 90 ÷ 3 = 120 ÷ 4 = 30.
🛠️ Interactive Graph Lab: From Table to Coordinate Plane
Practice plotting equivalent ratios and see how the straight line through the origin forms. Context: Earning $15 per hour mowing lawns (y = 15x).
Hours (x) Earnings (y) Point (x, y) Action
0 $0 (0, 0)
1 $15 (1, 15)
2 $30 (2, 30)
3 $45 (3, 45)
4 $60 (4, 60)
At x = 1 hour: Earnings = $15
Ordered pair: (1, 15) · Unit rate: 15 ÷ 1 = $15/hr

Practice with Graphs

12 miles per hour
24 miles per hour
1 mile per 12 hours

4 quarts of blue paint mixed with 8 quarts of yellow paint
8 quarts of blue paint mixed with 4 quarts of yellow paint
A total of 12 quarts of green paint made in 4 hours
The unit rate is 4 quarts of yellow paint per quart of blue paint

3.5 — Compare Ratio Relationships

Compare ratios and rates using unit rates and equivalent ratios in tables to find better buys and make decisions.

Key Ideas

To find the better buy or faster rate, calculate the unit rate for each option and compare.

You can also compare two ratio relationships by scaling both ratios in a ratio table until they share a common quantity, then comparing the other quantity.

Better buy: Store A: $6 for 4 apples ($1.50 each). Store B: $10 for 8 apples ($1.25 each).
Store B is the better buy.
Compare with a common quantity: Mix A uses 3 tbsp cocoa for 5 oz milk (3 : 5). Mix B uses 4 tbsp cocoa for 7 oz milk (4 : 7).
Scale both to 35 oz of milk: Mix A is 21 : 35 and Mix B is 20 : 35. Since 21 > 20, Mix A has more cocoa for the same amount of milk.

Practice

Pack A: 6 pencils for $3. Pack B: 10 pencils for $4. Which is the better buy?

Pack A ($0.50 each)
Pack B ($0.40 each)
They cost the same

Recipe A uses 2 cups of sugar for every 3 cups of flour (2 : 3). Recipe B uses 5 cups of sugar for every 6 cups of flour (5 : 6). Which recipe has more sugar for the same amount of flour?

Recipe B (because 2 : 3 equals 4 : 6, and 5 cups is more than 4 cups)
Recipe A (because 2 : 3 is greater than 5 : 6)
They have the exact same ratio of sugar to flour

Car A travels 180 miles in 3 hours. Car B travels 220 miles in 4 hours. Which car is traveling at a faster rate?

Car B (65 miles per hour)
They travel at the same rate
Car A (60 miles per hour vs. Car B at 55 miles per hour)

3.6 — Measurement Conversions

Convert units within and between measurement systems using ratio reasoning and conversion factors.

Key Ideas

A conversion factor is a ratio equal to 1 that relates two units (e.g., 12 inches / 1 foot).

Multiply by the conversion factor so the unwanted unit cancels out. For multi-step conversions, chain conversion factors.

Example: Convert 48 inches to feet.
48 in × (1 ft / 12 in) = 4 feet
Multi-step: Convert 3 yards to inches.
3 yd × (3 ft / 1 yd) = 9 ft
9 ft × (12 in / 1 ft) = 108 inches

Practice

How many feet are in 36 inches?

3 feet
4 feet
6 feet

Convert 5 kilometers to meters. (1 km = 1,000 m)

500 meters
50 meters
5,000 meters

How many inches are in 2 yards? (1 yard = 3 feet, 1 foot = 12 inches)

36 inches
72 inches
24 inches
