Understand Percent & Equivalent Ratios Version 2: Challenging

Grade 6 Math · Unit 4 Interactive Practice Studio (6.RP.A.3.C · 6.AT.4) · Lesson 4-1

1. Percent Sense: Beyond 100% and Below 1%

Start with the 100-grid, then stretch to percents that are not stuck between 0 and 100: several wholes, half squares, and fractions that do not land neatly on a friendly number. Problems climb from Warm-Up to Core, Stretch, and Challenge.

💡 1 whole = 100%  ·  1 square = 1%  ·  1/2 square = 0.5%

2. Simplify First, Then Scale to 100

Start with wholes that scale to 100 in one step, then move to wholes that need simplifying first. Divide both numbers by their greatest common factor, then multiply both by whatever makes the whole 100. Watch for decimals and for parts bigger than the whole.

🧭 Divide to simplify  →  multiply to 100  →  read the percent

3. Find the Part, the Whole, or the Percent

Any one of the three can be the mystery. Start with benchmark percents, then build from a benchmark (10%, 5%, 1%, or 50%) on the double number line, then scale up or down.

🔎 Ask first: which number is the whole (100%)?

4. Multi-Step Stories & Error Detective

Use percents to compare different-sized groups, chain several steps together, and decide whether someone else’s reasoning holds up.

🕵️ Check: percent of what whole? Did the whole change?
