Stretch: Measuring Polygons on the Grid

I can find the perimeter and area of a rectangle drawn on the coordinate plane from its vertices.

🧠 The Challenge

vertexside lengthperimeterarea

Find side lengths from coordinates (subtract the matching x- or y-values), then perimeter = sum of sides and area = length × width.

👀 Worked Example

Rectangle with vertices (1,1), (6,1), (6,4), (1,4): width = 6−1 = 5, height = 4−1 = 3. Perimeter = 2(5+3) = 16; Area = 5 × 3 = 15.

✏️ Your Turn

0 of 3 checks complete

1. A rectangle is 5 wide and 3 tall. Its perimeter is…

2. Same rectangle: its area is…

3. Side from (2,1) to (2,7) has length…

💬 Explain Your Thinking

Explain how you found perimeter and area from the corners:

"The width is blank and the height is blank, so perimeter = blank and area = blank."
