Stretch: Two Operations in One Expression

I can translate a two-step verbal description into an algebraic expression.

🧠 The Challenge

expressiontwice / triplemore than / less thanorder of words

Two-step phrases combine operations. "3 more than twice a number" = 2n + 3. Be careful: "less than" reverses order — "5 less than a number" = n − 5, not 5 − n.

👀 Worked Example

"Twice a number, decreased by 4" → 2n − 4. "Three more than half a number" → (n ÷ 2) + 3.

✏️ Your Turn

0 of 3 checks complete

1. "4 more than twice a number n" is…

2. "5 less than three times a number n" is…

3. "Double the sum of a number n and 6" is…

💬 Explain Your Thinking

Write a two-step phrase and its expression, and explain the order:

"My phrase 'blank' becomes blank, because I first blank and then blank."
