Stretch: Reading Position as an Inequality

I can interpret an inequality between two numbers as their relative position on a number line.

🧠 The Challenge

greater than (>)less than (<)to the rightto the leftnumber line

On a horizontal number line, the number farther right is always greater. So −3 > −7 because −3 sits to the right of −7. The statement and the picture must agree.

👀 Worked Example

Is −2 > −5? Plot both: −2 is right of −5, so yes, −2 > −5. The inequality −9 < −4 means −9 is to the left of −4.

✏️ Your Turn

0 of 3 checks complete

1. Which statement is true?

2. A number to the right of another on the number line is always…

3. −9 < −4 means −9 is…

💬 Explain Your Thinking

Explain how the number line shows that −1 > −6:

"On the number line −1 is to the blank of −6, so −1 is blank than −6, written −1 blank −6."
