Stretch: Order Fractions, Decimals, and Negatives Together

I can order a mix of fractions, decimals, and negative numbers, and compare their absolute values.

🧠 The Challenge

rational numberorderabsolute valuenumber line

To order a mix, picture them on one number line. Negatives are left of 0; the farther left, the smaller. Absolute value compares distance from 0, separate from order.

👀 Worked Example

Order −1.5, ½, −2, 0.75 from least to greatest: −2, −1.5, ½, 0.75. (½ = 0.5.)

✏️ Your Turn

0 of 3 checks complete

1. Least to greatest: −3, 1, −0.5

2. Which is greater: −¼ or −¾?

3. Which has the LARGER absolute value: −5 or 2?

💬 Explain Your Thinking

Explain how you ordered a mix of numbers:

"I placed them on a number line as blank. The order from least to greatest is blank."
