Stretch: Finding Distance Between Points

I can graph points in all four quadrants and find the distance between two points that share a coordinate.

🧠 The Big Idea

When two points are on the same horizontal or vertical line (they share one coordinate), the distance between them is the difference of the other coordinate — which is the same as |a − b|.

Example: (−3, 2) and (4, 2) share y = 2. Distance = |4 − (−3)| = 7 units (3 left of zero + 4 right of zero).

✏️ Your Turn

0 of 3 checks complete

1. Distance between (2, 5) and (2, −1)? (they share x = 2)

2. Point (−4, 3): which quadrant?

3. Distance between (−5, 0) and (6, 0)?

💬 Explain Your Thinking

Explain how you find distance when two points share a coordinate:

"Because the points share their blank-value, I find the distance by blank, which equals blank units."
