Stretch: One-Variable Inequalities from Stories

I can write a one-variable inequality from a situation, solve it, and describe the solution set.

🧠 The Challenge

inequalityat least (≥)at most (≤)solution setnumber line

An inequality has many solutions — a whole set. "At least 8" → x ≥ 8 (solutions 8, 9, 10, …). To solve x + 3 ≥ 10, subtract 3 from both sides: x ≥ 7.

👀 Worked Example

"You can spend at most $15": c ≤ 15 (any amount up to 15). Solve x + 3 ≥ 10 → x ≥ 7, so 7, 8, 9, … all work.

✏️ Your Turn

0 of 3 checks complete

1. "You can spend at most $15" (let c = cost) is…

2. Solve x + 3 ≥ 10.

3. For x > 4, which number is a solution?

💬 Explain Your Thinking

Write a real situation, its inequality, and two solutions:

"My situation: blank. Inequality: x blank blank. Two solutions are blank and blank."
