Unit 1: Math Is Discovery Lesson 1-4 5.MD.C.5

Math is Explaining and Sharing

Las matemáticas son explicar y compartir

I can construct an argument using equations, drawings, or words, and use volume to defend a recommendation.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my thinking with clear math vocabulary using the words argument, conjecture, and cubic units.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we build a math argument. We use volume — the space inside a box — to defend a recommendation with numbers instead of opinions.

Volume = length × width × height, measured in cubic units. Compare the totals, then say which choice is better and why.

Español

Esta noche construimos un argumento matemático. Usamos el volumen —el espacio dentro de una caja— para defender una recomendación con números y no con opiniones.

Volumen = largo × ancho × alto, medido en unidades cúbicas. Compara los totales y luego di cuál opción es mejor y por qué.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

This skill supports everyday problem solving with money, measurements, games, planning, and checking whether an answer is reasonable.
Esta habilidad ayuda con dinero, medidas, juegos, planificación y con revisar si una respuesta es razonable.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: a large box is 8 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 10 inches tall.

Ejemplo real: una caja grande mide 8 pulgadas de largo, 3 de ancho y 10 de alto.

Its volume is 8 × 3 × 10 = 240 cubic inches. Three of those boxes hold 240 × 3 = 720 cubic inches.

Su volumen es 8 × 3 × 10 = 240 pulgadas cúbicas. Tres cajas así contienen 240 × 3 = 720 pulgadas cúbicas.

A jumbo box is 10 × 4 × 10 = 400 cubic inches. Two of those hold 400 × 2 = 800 cubic inches.

Una caja jumbo mide 10 × 4 × 10 = 400 pulgadas cúbicas. Dos de esas contienen 400 × 2 = 800 pulgadas cúbicas.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • What are the three measurements of this box?
  • Which total is bigger — and how do you know?

Watch for: Listen for "argument" (argumento) — a claim backed by numbers, not a guess.

Pregunte a su estudiante

  • ¿Cuáles son las tres medidas de esta caja?
  • ¿Cuál total es mayor, y cómo lo sabes?

Preste atención: Escucha la palabra "argumento": una afirmación respaldada por números, no una suposición.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

argument argumento

A chain of reasons — equations, drawings, or words — used to defend your thinking.

Una cadena de razones — ecuaciones, dibujos o palabras — que usas para defender tu pensamiento.

conjecture conjetura

A mathematical statement you believe is true but have not yet proven.

Una afirmación matemática que crees verdadera pero que aún no has probado.

counterexample contraejemplo

A single example that shows a statement is not always true.

Un solo ejemplo que muestra que una afirmación no siempre es verdadera.

volume volumen

The amount of space a solid figure takes up, measured in cubic units.

La cantidad de espacio que ocupa una figura sólida, medida en unidades cúbicas.

cubic unit unidad cúbica

A cube with edges 1 unit long — the unit used to measure volume.

Un cubo cuyas aristas miden 1 unidad — la unidad que se usa para medir el volumen.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Find two boxes at home. Measure each one's length, width, and height.

Busquen dos cajas en casa. Midan el largo, el ancho y el alto de cada una.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint. / Deje que su estudiante explique primero y después abra una pista.

  1. Multiply the three measurements for the first box.
Multipliquen las tres medidas de la primera caja.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    length × width × height
    largo × ancho × alto
  2. Do the same for the second box.
Hagan lo mismo con la segunda caja.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
Use the same units for both boxes.
Usen las mismas unidades en las dos cajas.
  3. Say which box holds more, and finish the sentence "because…"
Digan cuál caja contiene más y terminen la frase "porque…"
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
"The blue box holds more, because 300 > 250 cubic inches."
"La caja azul contiene más, porque 300 > 250 pulgadas cúbicas".
