Unit 2: Fraction Detective Agency Lesson 2-8 6.DS.4

Describe Data Using the Mean

I can determine the mean of a data set, use a target mean to find a missing value, and explain the mean as the fair share and the balance point of the data.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my reasoning using the words mean, average, measure of center, balance point, and data set.

What Your Child Is Learning

In this lesson, students practice how to determine the mean of a data set, use a target mean to find a missing value, and explain the mean as the fair share and the balance point of the data. They learn to show their thinking with numbers, pictures, words, or a model. The goal is not just getting an answer. Students should be able to explain why the answer makes sense.

Why This Matters

Data helps people make decisions. Students use these skills to read sports stats, compare survey results, notice patterns, and decide what a graph is really saying.

What It May Look Like In Class

Your child may use the interactive lesson, guided notes, examples from the board, partner talk, and short practice problems. They may be asked to solve, draw a model, label important numbers, and explain their reasoning in a sentence.

How You Can Help At Home

You do not need to teach a new method. Ask your child to read the problem out loud, circle the important numbers, and explain what they tried first. Helpful questions include: What do you know? What are you trying to find? Does your answer make sense?

Key Vocabulary

Mean Media

The average of a data set. Add all the values, then divide by how many values there are.

Example: (8 + 6 + 10) ÷ 3 = 8

Average Promedio

Another word for the mean — the amount each value would be if the total were shared equally.

Example: 11 from 8, 12, 10, 14

Measure of center Medida de centro

A single number used to describe the middle, or typical value, of a whole data set.

Example: A median of 83.5

Balance point Punto de equilibrio

The value where the total distance of the data above it equals the total distance below it. The mean is the balance point.

Example: The mean of 10 in 7, 10, 13

Data set Conjunto de datos

The whole collection of values that were gathered or measured.

Example: All 20 history scores together

Try It Together

Pick one or two problems. Let your child explain the first step before opening the answer.

  1. Find the mean of 4, 6, 8, and 10.
    Show answer

    7

  2. Find the median of 3, 5, 9, 12, and 20.
    Show answer

    9

  3. A dot plot has four dots above 6. What does that mean?
    Show answer

The value 6 appears four times.

  4. Name one question data could help answer.
    Show answer

Answers vary, such as which lunch is most popular.
