Unit 5: Area, Surface Area & Volume Lesson 5-10 6.GR.2

Volume of Rectangular Prisms

Volumen de prismas rectangulares

I can find the volume of a rectangular prism, including ones with fractional edge lengths, using base area × height.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my work using the words volume, rectangular prism, dimensions, and base area.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we find the volume of a box even when one edge is a fraction or a decimal, like 1.5. The rule does not change: multiply length × width × height.

A fraction or decimal edge is still just a number. You multiply the three edges the same way you always do.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

Geometry helps with building, decorating, packing, maps, art, and design. Students use it when they plan space, compare shapes, or figure out how much material a project needs.
Ayuda a planear espacios y calcular materiales.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: a time capsule is 2 ft long, 1.5 ft wide, and 1 ft tall. One edge, 1.5, is a decimal. We still use volume = length × width × height.

Igual usamos volumen = largo × ancho × altura.

Put in the numbers: volume = 2 × 1.5 × 1.

Pon los números: volumen = 2 × 1.5 × 1.

Multiply the first two: 2 × 1.5 = 3. (Two groups of 1.5 make 3.)

Multiplica los dos primeros: 2 × 1.5 = 3. (Dos grupos de 1.5 dan 3.)

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • What are the three dimensions of the box?
  • Does a fraction or decimal change the rule? No — we still multiply.

Watch for: Listen for "dimensiones" — it means how long, how wide, and how tall the box is.

No — igual multiplicamos.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Volume of Rectangular Prisms Volumen de prismas rectangulares

The space inside a rectangular prism. Formula: V = Bh = l × w × h.

El espacio dentro de un prisma rectangular. Fórmula: V = Bh = l × w × h.

Volume Volumen

How much space is inside a solid shape.

Rectangular prism Prisma rectangular

A solid box shape with six flat rectangle sides.

The units used to measure space inside, like cubic inches.

Dimensions Dimensiones

How long, how wide, and how tall a shape is.

The area of the bottom of a solid. Volume = base area × height.

El área del fondo de un sólido. Volumen = área de la base × altura.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Find the volume of a capsule design that is 4 ft long, 2 ft wide, and 0.5 ft tall (half a foot).

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Write the rule and put in the numbers. Start by multiplying the first two — what do you get?
Escriban la regla y pongan los números. Empiecen multiplicando los dos primeros — ¿qué obtienen?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    Volume = 4 × 2 × 0.5. First 4 × 2 = 8.
    Volumen = 4 × 2 × 0.5. Primero 4 × 2 = 8.
  2. Now multiply by 0.5 — that means take half. What is the volume?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    Half of 8 is 4: 8 × 0.5 = 4. The volume is 4 cubic feet.
    La mitad de 8 es 4: 8 × 0.5 = 4. El volumen es 4 pies cúbicos.
  3. Check together: the decimal edge just made the answer a little smaller. The rule stayed the same.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
A smaller height means a smaller volume.
