Unit 5: Area, Surface Area & Volume Lesson 5-6 6.GR.4

Represent Three-Dimensional Figures in Two Dimensions

Representar figuras tridimensionales en dos dimensiones

I can find the surface area of a solid by using its net.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my work using the words surface area, net, face, and two-dimensional.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we find the surface area of a box — how much paper it takes to cover the outside. We unfold the box into a flat net and add up all six faces.

A box has 6 faces in 3 matching pairs. Find the area of each pair, then add all six faces together. The answer is in square units.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

Geometry helps with building, decorating, packing, maps, art, and design. Students use it when they plan space, compare shapes, or figure out how much material a project needs.
Ayuda a planear espacios y calcular materiales.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: a box is 8 long, 5 wide, and 3 tall. We unfold it into a net and see 3 pairs of faces.

Top and bottom: each is 8 × 5 = 40. There are 2, so 2 × 40 = 80.

Arriba y abajo: cada una es 8 × 5 = 40. Hay 2, así que 2 × 40 = 80.

Front and back: each is 8 × 3 = 24, so 2 × 24 = 48. Left and right: each is 5 × 3 = 15, so 2 × 15 = 30.

Frente y atrás: cada una es 8 × 3 = 24, así que 2 × 24 = 48. Izquierda y derecha: cada una es 5 × 3 = 15, así que 2 × 15 = 30.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • How many faces does the box have? Let's find each one.
  • Each face has a matching face. Did we double every pair?

Watch for: Listen for "área de superficie" — it means the total area of all the flat sides, like wrapping paper.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Surface Area Using Nets Área de superficie usando redes

The total area of all the faces of a solid. A net unfolds the solid flat so you can see every face and add their areas.

The total area of all the flat sides of a solid.

Net Plantilla (desarrollo plano)

A flat shape that folds up into a solid.

Face Cara

One flat side of a solid shape.

Un lado plano de una figura sólida.

Two-dimensional Bidimensional

A flat shape with length and width, but no thickness.

Edge Arista

The line where two flat sides of a solid meet.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Find the surface area of a smaller box that is 4 long, 3 wide, and 2 tall.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Top and bottom: find the area of one, then double it. What do you get?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    4 × 3 = 12, times 2 = 24.
    4 × 3 = 12, por 2 = 24.
  2. Now the front-and-back pair and the left-and-right pair. What are those two totals?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    Front and back: 4 × 2 = 8, times 2 = 16. Left and right: 3 × 2 = 6, times 2 = 12.
    Frente y atrás: 4 × 2 = 8, por 2 = 16. Izquierda y derecha: 3 × 2 = 6, por 2 = 12.
  3. Add all three pairs. What is the surface area, and what unit does it use?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    24 + 16 + 12 = 52. The surface area is 52 square inches.
    24 + 16 + 12 = 52. El área de superficie es 52 pulgadas cuadradas.
