Unit 5: Area, Surface Area & Volume Lesson 5-8 6.GR.4

Determine Surface Area of Pyramids

Determinar el área de superficie de pirámides

I can find the surface area of a pyramid by adding the base area and the lateral faces.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my work using the words pyramid, slant height, lateral face, and base.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we find the surface area of a pyramid. We add the area of the flat base plus the area of all the triangle sides that meet at a point on top.

Surface area of a pyramid = the base area + all the triangle faces. For each triangle, use ½ × base × slant height. Don't forget the base.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

Geometry helps with building, decorating, packing, maps, art, and design. Students use it when they plan space, compare shapes, or figure out how much material a project needs.
Ayuda a planear espacios y calcular materiales.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: a square pyramid has a 6 × 6 base and a slant height of 8 (the height of each triangle side).

First the base area: 6 × 6 = 36.

Primero el área de la base: 6 × 6 = 36.

Now one triangle side: ½ × 6 × 8 = 24. A square pyramid has 4 triangle sides, so 4 × 24 = 96.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • What is the base area? Let's find it first.
  • How many triangle sides are there? Did we add the base too?

Watch for: Listen for "pirámide" — a solid with a flat base and triangle sides that meet at a top point.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Surface Area of Pyramids Área de superficie de pirámides

The total area of a pyramid's base and triangular faces. Formula: SA = B + lateral area.

A solid with a flat bottom and triangle sides that meet at one point on top.

Slant height Altura inclinada (apotema)

The height of a side triangle, measured along its slanted face.

Lateral face Cara lateral

A triangle side of a pyramid, not the bottom.

Base Base

The flat bottom of a pyramid.

El fondo plano de una pirámide.

Apex Ápice

The point at the top of a pyramid where the sides meet.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Find the surface area of a smaller square pyramid with a 4 × 4 base and a slant height of 5.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. First the base. It is a 4 × 4 square — what is its area?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    4 × 4 = 16.
    4 × 4 = 16.
  2. One triangle side is ½ × 4 × 5. Find it, then multiply by the 4 sides. What do you get?
    Un lado triangular es ½ × 4 × 5. Hállenlo y multipliquen por los 4 lados. ¿Qué obtienen?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    ½ × 4 × 5 = 10 for one side, and 4 × 10 = 40 for all four.
    ½ × 4 × 5 = 10 para un lado, y 4 × 10 = 40 para los cuatro.
  3. Add the base and the four sides. What is the surface area?
Sumen la base y los cuatro lados. ¿Cuál es el área de superficie?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    16 + 40 = 56. The surface area is 56 square inches.
    16 + 40 = 56. El área de superficie es 56 pulgadas cuadradas.
