Unit 6: Expressions Lesson 6-8 6.AT.7

Generate Equivalent Expressions

Generar expresiones equivalentes

I can use the commutative, associative, and identity properties to rewrite expressions.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my reasoning using the words commutative property, associative property, and identity property.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we learn math rules called properties. They let us change the order or the grouping of numbers without changing the answer.

Changing the order or the grouping of numbers that are being added or multiplied does not change the total. This only works for adding and multiplying, not for subtracting or dividing.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

This math shows up in shopping, recipes, sports scores, speed, discounts, and comparing choices. It helps students decide what is fair, what is a better deal, and how quantities change together.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: a band has 3 guitarists, 5 drummers, and 2 keyboard players. Added in order, that is 3 + 5 + 2 = 10 musicians.

The Commutative Property says the order does not matter. If we seat drummers first: 5 + 3 + 2 = 10. Still 10 musicians.

The Associative Property says the grouping does not matter. (3 + 5) + 2 means add 3 + 5 = 8 first, then 8 + 2 = 10.

(3 + 5) + 2 significa sumar primero 3 + 5 = 8, luego 8 + 2 = 10.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • Did the order of the numbers change, or did the parentheses move?
  • Let's add both ways and see if we get the same total.

Watch for: Listen for "propiedad conmutativa" — it means you change the order (like 6 + 9 = 9 + 6).

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Properties of Operations Propiedades de las operaciones

Rules that let you reorder or regroup numbers without changing an expression's value.

Commutative Property Propiedad conmutativa

You can change the order and get the same answer.

Associative Property Propiedad asociativa

You can change the grouping and get the same answer.

Puedes cambiar la agrupación y obtener la misma respuesta.

Identity Property Propiedad de identidad

Adding 0 or multiplying by 1 keeps the same value.

Property Propiedad

A rule that is always true in math.

Distributive Property Propiedad distributiva

Multiplying a number by everything inside the parentheses: a(b + c) = ab + ac.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Use a smaller band: 6 singers and 9 dancers. Check that the order does not change the total.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Add them in order: 6 + 9. What do you get?
    Súmenlos en orden: 6 + 9. ¿Cuánto da?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    6 + 9 = 15 people in all.
    6 + 9 = 15 personas en total.
  2. Now switch the order: 9 + 6. Is the answer the same?
Ahora cambien el orden: 9 + 6. ¿Es la misma respuesta?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
9 + 6 = 15 too. The order did not change the total.
    9 + 6 = 15 también. El orden no cambió el total.
  3. Check together: would 6 − 9 give the same as 9 − 6? Try it and see why order matters for subtraction.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    9 − 6 = 3, but 6 − 9 is below zero, so they are not equal.
    9 − 6 = 3, pero 6 − 9 queda por debajo de cero, así que no son iguales.
