Unit 6: Expressions Lesson 6-9 6.NOS.1

Divide Whole Numbers by Fractions

Dividir números enteros no negativos entre fracciones

I can divide a whole number by a fraction by multiplying by the reciprocal.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my steps using the words fraction, reciprocal, quotient, and Keep, Change, Flip.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we learn a quick trick to divide a whole number by a fraction. It is called Keep, Change, Flip.

Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal — the fraction turned upside down.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

This skill supports everyday problem solving with money, measurements, games, planning, and checking whether an answer is reasonable.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: there are 4 pounds of powder, and each bag holds 1/2 pound. We want 4 ÷ 1/2 — how many bags can we fill?

Keep the first number: keep the 4. Change the ÷ to ×. Flip the fraction 1/2 upside down to make 2/1, which is just 2.

Now multiply: 4 × 2 = 8.

Ahora multiplica: 4 × 2 = 8.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • Which fraction do we flip — and which number stays the same?
  • Once we flip, what multiplication problem do we have now?

Watch for: Listen for "recíproco" — it means a fraction turned upside down, like 1/2 becoming 2/1.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Divide Whole Numbers by Fractions Dividir números enteros entre fracciones

Find how many fractional groups fit in a whole number by multiplying by the reciprocal.

A counting number with no fraction or decimal, like 0, 1, 2, 3.

A number that shows part of a whole, like 3/4.

A fraction turned upside down.

Una fracción volteada de arriba abajo.

Keep, Change, Flip Mantener, cambiar, invertir

A shortcut for dividing fractions: keep the first number, change ÷ to ×, flip the second. It works because dividing by a fraction gives the same answer as multiplying by its reciprocal.

Quotient Cociente

The answer when you divide.

La respuesta cuando divides.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Imagine 3 whole cups of flour, and each batch of cookies uses 1/4 cup. How many batches can you make? Solve 3 ÷ 1/4 with Keep, Change, Flip.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Keep the 3. Change ÷ to ×. Flip 1/4 to make 4/1, which is 4.
Mantengan el 3. Cambien ÷ por ×. Volteen 1/4 para hacer 4/1, que es 4.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
Only the fraction gets flipped — the 3 stays as 3.
  2. Now multiply. How many batches is 3 ÷ 1/4?
    Ahora multipliquen. ¿Cuántas tandas es 3 ÷ 1/4?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    3 × 4 = 12. So 3 ÷ 1/4 = 12 batches.
    3 × 4 = 12. Entonces 3 ÷ 1/4 = 12 tandas.
  3. Check together: why is 12 bigger than the 3 cups we started with?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
Each batch uses less than one whole cup, so many batches fit.
