To estimate a percent of a number, you swap hard numbers for friendly ones. That uses four skills: knowing that 25% = 1/4 and 50% = 1/2, finding 10% by dividing by 10, finding a fraction of a number, and rounding to a friendly number. Some percents are benchmarks. They are easy to use because they match simple fractions: 50% = 1/2, 25% = 1/4, 75% = 3/4, and 10% = 1/10. To use one, divide the whole. When the whole is a hard number, round it to a friendly number first.
