Tonight we work with factors and multiples: the greatest common factor (GCF) for splitting things into equal groups, and the least common multiple (LCM) for finding when two repeating things line up.
For the grown-up helping tonightPara el adulto que ayuda hoy
12 = 1×12 = 2×6 = 3×4
GCF example: a store has 48 pencils and 36 notebooks, and wants identical combo packs with nothing left over.
List the factors of each.
Enumera los factores de cada uno.
48: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 48. 36: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36. The greatest one in both lists is 12, so they make 12 packs.
LCM example: painting class every 8 weeks, pottery every 6 weeks, both this week.
When do they meet again?
¿Cuándo vuelven a coincidir?
List multiples: 8, 16, 24 … and 6, 12, 18, 24 ….
Enumera múltiplos: 8, 16, 24… y 6, 12, 18, 24….
The first week in both lists is 24, so they meet again in 24 weeks.
Listen for "factor" (factor) — what divides a number — and "multiple" (múltiplo) — where you land skip-counting by it.
Check the size: a GCF is never bigger than the smaller number, and an LCM is never smaller than the bigger one.
Don't forget 1 and the number itself — both are always factors, and leaving them out makes the GCF come out too small.

Listing what divides a number evenly (its factors) and what it divides into evenly (its multiples), then finding what two numbers share.

Descomposición en factores primos
Descomposición en factores primos
Writing a number as a product of prime numbers, usually with a factor tree. Multiplying the primes two numbers share also gives the GCF.

A teacher has 24 pencils and 40 erasers. She wants to make identical supply kits with nothing left over. What is the greatest number of kits she can make, and what goes in each kit? Explain how you know.
The number of kits must divide both 24 and 40, so use the GCF. Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24. Factors of 40: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 20, 40. GCF = 8, so 8 kits, each with 24 ÷ 8 = 3 pencils and 40 ÷ 8 = 5 erasers.
