Tonight we learn a quick trick to divide a whole number by a fraction. It is called Keep, Change, Flip.
For the grown-up helping tonightPara el adulto que ayuda hoy
2 ÷ ¼ = 8
Real example: there are 4 pounds of powder, and each bag holds 1/2 pound.
We want 4 ÷ 1/2 — how many bags can we fill?
Queremos 4 ÷ 1/2 — ¿cuántas bolsas podemos llenar?
Keep the first number: keep the 4.
Mantén el primer número: mantén el 4.
Change the ÷ to ×. Flip the fraction 1/2 upside down to make 2/1, which is just 2.
Now multiply: 4 × 2 = 8.
Ahora multiplica: 4 × 2 = 8.
So 4 ÷ 1/2 = 8.
Entonces 4 ÷ 1/2 = 8.
You can fill 8 bags. This makes sense: each pound fills 2 bags, and 4 pounds × 2 = 8.
Puedes llenar 8 bolsas.
Listen for "recíproco" — it means a fraction turned upside down, like 1/2 becoming 2/1.
Listen for "Mantener, Cambiar, Invertir" — keep the first number, change ÷ to ×, flip the second fraction.
Let your student do the flip first. Ask "Which number do we flip?" before helping.

A dog eats 3/4 pound of food each day. A bag has 5 pounds. How many FULL days will the bag last, and how much food is left after those days? Explain what the fraction part of 5 ÷ 3/4 means.
5 ÷ 3/4 = 5 × 4/3 = 20/3 = 6 2/3. The bag lasts 6 full days, using 6 × 3/4 = 4 1/2 pounds, so 1/2 pound is left. The 2/3 means the leftover is 2/3 of one day's serving (2/3 × 3/4 = 1/2 pound).5 ÷ 3/4 = 5 × 4/3 = 20/3 = 6 2/3. La bolsa dura 6 días completos y usa 6 × 3/4 = 4 1/2 libras, así que sobra 1/2 libra. El 2/3 significa que lo que sobra es 2/3 de la porción de un día (2/3 × 3/4 = 1/2 libra).

Why:Por qué: Each row keeps the whole number, changes ÷ to ×, and flips the unit fraction, so 5 ÷ 1/4 becomes 5 × 4/1 = 20 and 3 ÷ 1/6 becomes 3 × 6/1 = 18. The pattern the table reveals is that dividing by 1/n is the same as multiplying by n, because every whole contains n of those pieces.

Why:Por qué: Dividing by a unit fraction multiplies by its denominator, since each whole holds that many pieces: 4 ÷ 1/3 = 4 × 3 = 12 and 9 ÷ 1/4 = 9 × 4 = 36. Two different expressions can share a quotient — 5 ÷ 1/6 and 6 ÷ 1/5 both equal 30 — so compute every card instead of matching by size alone.

Why:Por qué: The dividend stays 12 while the divisor changes, and smaller pieces mean more of them fit: 12 ÷ 1/2 = 24, 12 ÷ 1/3 = 36, and 12 ÷ 1/4 = 48. Larger divisors reverse the trend — 12 ÷ 2/3 = 18 and 12 ÷ 3/4 = 16 — because each piece takes up more of a whole.

Why:Por qué: The question asks how many 2/3-pizza servings fit in 8 pizzas, so the equation is 8 ÷ 2/3. Keep, change, flip gives 8 × 3/2 = 24/2 = 12 servings. The count beats 8 because each serving is smaller than a whole pizza, so every pizza makes more than one serving.
