📖 What we're learning tonightQué aprendemos hoy

English

Tonight we name a point's quadrant from its SIGNS alone — without plotting it at all.

Key words
  • Ordered Pairs in All Four Quadrants
  • Quadrant
  • Negative coordinate

  • Cuadrante
  • Coordenada negativa

For the grown-up helping tonightPara el adulto que ayuda hoy

  • If they get stuck, ask:Si se atora, pregunten: Which way does each sign send you along each axis?¿Hacia dónde te lleva el signo en cada eje?
  • Try not to say:Eviten decir: A negative first number means move down.Un primer número negativo significa moverse hacia abajo.

🎯 The big ideaLa idea principal

In one sentence: The two signs of an ordered pair name the quadrant: (+, +) is I, (−, +) is II, (−, −) is III, (+, −) is IV. The first number always controls LEFT and RIGHT, and the second always controls UP and DOWN — never swap those jobs.

En una frase: Los dos signos de un par ordenado nombran el cuadrante: (+, +) es I, (−, +) es II, (−, −) es III, (+, −) es IV. El primer número siempre controla IZQUIERDA y DERECHA, y el segundo siempre ARRIBA y ABAJO — nunca cambies esos papeles.

Coordinate PlanePlano de coordenadas 112233445566 (3, 4) 1. Right 3 (x) 2. Up 4 (y) Always x first, then y.
Start at (0, 0). The first number moves across, the second number moves up or down.
  1. Set upPlanteaStep 1Paso 1

    Real example: base camp is the origin (0, 0), and four clues sit at A(4, 3), B(−5, 2), C(−3, −4) and D(2, −5).

    Ejemplo real: el campamento base es el origen (0, 0), y cuatro pistas están en A(4, 3), B(−5, 2), C(−3, −4) y D(2, −5).

  2. ModelModelaStep 2Paso 2

A(4, 3) is right 4 and up 3 — both positive, so Quadrant I (upper right).

  3. SolveResuelveStep 3Paso 3

B(−5, 2) is left 5 and up 2 — negative then positive, so Quadrant II (upper left).

  4. CheckRevisaStep 4Paso 4

C(−3, −4) is left and down: Quadrant III.

    More detailMás detalle

D(2, −5) is right and down: Quadrant IV.

Watch for these (3)Ten en cuenta (3)
  • 👀

Listen for "quadrant" (cuadrante) — one of the four parts of the grid, numbered I to IV counterclockwise from upper right.

  • ↔️

A negative x means LEFT, never down. Matching a sign to the wrong axis puts the point in the wrong quadrant entirely.

  • ✋

Have your student say "left or right" for the first number and "up or down" for the second, out loud.

TOUCH & TRYTOCA Y PRUEBA

Plot the points. Read each pair across first, then up or down.

WHY THIS MATTERS¿POR QUÉ IMPORTA?

GPS Navigation & Drone Delivery Navegación GPS y entrega con drones

Every GPS in smartphones and delivery drones uses coordinate geometry (latitude and longitude) just like the (x, y) grid to pinpoint your doorstep within inches!

Reversing the x and y coordinates (moving vertical first instead of horizontal).

💬 Parent Coach Question:Pregunta de guía: Ask: 'Remember: Run before you jump! Which letter comes first in the alphabet: x or y?'
