Unit R2 · Builds 6.NS.1
🍕 Fraction Foundations
Five step-by-step lessons that take you from understanding what a fraction means all the way through multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. Every skill here unlocks the fraction division you'll need in Grade 6 (6.NS.1). Each lesson follows: Learn It → Try It → Practice → Exit Ticket.
The Five Lessons
Start at the Beginning or Jump In
Each lesson is self-paced and self-checking — open it, read the worked examples, check the practice problems, and finish the exit ticket. No login needed.
🍕 Understand Fractions
Learn what a numerator and denominator mean, model fractions as parts of a whole, and locate fractions on a number line.
Lesson 2 · Builds 6.NS.1🍕 Equivalent Fractions & Simplifying
Find equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing, and simplify fractions to their lowest terms using the GCF.
Lesson 3 · Builds 6.NS.1🍕 Compare & Order Fractions
Compare fractions using common denominators and benchmark fractions, then order a set of fractions from least to greatest.
Lesson 4 · Builds 6.NS.1🍕 Add & Subtract Fractions
Add and subtract fractions with like denominators, then extend to unlike denominators by finding the LCD.
Lesson 5 · Builds 6.NS.1🍕 Multiply Fractions & Mixed Numbers
Multiply fractions by fractions and whole numbers, find a fraction of a quantity, and multiply mixed numbers.
For the Teacher
Using Unit R2
Who it's for: Grade 7–8 students who struggle with fraction concepts before tackling Grade 6 fraction division (6.NS.1) or any work with rational numbers.
Suggested sequence: Lessons 1 → 5 build on each other. Students who are solid on equivalent fractions (L2) can skip L1; students weak on comparing (L3) should complete L2 first. All lessons end with a self-checking exit ticket.
Fraction visuals: Every lesson uses inline SVG fraction bars so students can see the math, not just compute it. No images, no external files needed.
