Unit 10: Math Is Synthesis Lesson 10-2 MPP.7

Math is Beauty

Las matemáticas son belleza

I can use bilateral symmetry to describe structure in nature and in human creations.

Speaking and writing goal: I can describe a symmetric design using the words mirror image, line of symmetry, and balance.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we use bilateral symmetry — two sides that are mirror images — to describe shapes in nature and in things people build.

If you can draw one line that splits a figure into two matching halves, that line is a line of symmetry.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

This skill supports everyday problem solving with money, measurements, games, planning, and checking whether an answer is reasonable.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: a butterfly. Its left and right sides look like mirror images.

Draw a line straight down the middle of the butterfly's body.

Everything on the left is reflected on the right, so the butterfly is symmetric.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • Where could you fold it so both halves match?
  • Does the left side look like the right side?

Watch for: Listen for "line of symmetry" (eje de simetría) — the fold line that makes both halves match.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

symmetric simétrico

Having two halves that match — one side is a mirror image of the other.

mirror image imagen reflejada

A copy of a figure flipped across a line, so the two halves face each other.

Reflective symmetry in plants and animals — the two sides of the body mirror each other.

line of symmetry eje de simetría

The line you can draw through a figure so each side is a reflection of the other.

balance equilibrio

An even, steady arrangement — neither side feels heavier than the other.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Hunt for symmetry in your home for five minutes.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Find one object with a line of symmetry.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    A plate, a window, a shirt, a spoon.
  2. Find one object with NO line of symmetry.
Busquen un objeto SIN eje de simetría.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    A shoe, a hand, a scribble.
Un zapato, una mano, un garabato.
  3. Find one object with MORE than one line of symmetry.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
A square has 4; a circle has infinitely many.
Un cuadrado tiene 4; un círculo tiene infinitos.
