Unit 2: Statistics Lesson 2-9 6.DS.6c

Describe Data by Mean Absolute Deviation

Describir datos con la desviación media absoluta

I can find the mean absolute deviation (MAD) to describe how spread out data is.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my work using the words mean absolute deviation, deviation, absolute value, and spread.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we find the mean absolute deviation (MAD): the average distance of each number from the mean. It tells us how spread out the data is.

MAD is the average of how far each number is from the mean. A small MAD means the numbers are close together; a large MAD means they are spread out.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

Data helps people make decisions. Students use these skills to read sports stats, compare survey results, notice patterns, and decide what a graph is really saying.
Los datos ayudan a tomar decisiones. Su hijo/a aprende a leer gráficas, comparar resultados y explicar patrones.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example, the data set 6, 8, 10, 12. First find the mean: 6 + 8 + 10 + 12 = 36, then 36 ÷ 4 = 9. The mean is 9.

Ejemplo real, el conjunto 6, 8, 10, 12. Primero encuentra la media: 6 + 8 + 10 + 12 = 36, luego 36 ÷ 4 = 9. La media es 9.

Find each deviation (value − mean): 6−9 = −3, 8−9 = −1, 10−9 = 1, 12−9 = 3.

Encuentra cada desviación (valor − media): 6−9 = −3, 8−9 = −1, 10−9 = 1, 12−9 = 3.

Take the absolute value of each (the distance, never negative (zero is allowed)): 3, 1, 1, 3.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • What is the mean first? We need it before anything else.
  • How far is each number from the mean? Count the distance.

Watch for: Listen for "desviación" — it means how far a number is from the mean.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Mean Absolute Deviation Desviación media absoluta

The average distance of data values from the mean; it describes spread.

How far a number is from the mean.

Absolute Value Valor absoluto

How far a number is from zero. It is never negative.

How far apart the numbers are.

Qué tan separados están los números.

Data distribution Distribución de datos

How the data looks: where it sits and how spread out it is.

Variability Variabilidad

How spread out the numbers are.

Qué tan separados están los números.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Imagine the coach wants to know how steady a player is. The player's scores are 9, 10, and 11.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Find the mean. Add the three scores, then divide by 3. What is it?
Encuentren la media. Sumen los tres puntajes y dividan entre 3. ¿Cuál es?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    9 + 10 + 11 = 30, and 30 ÷ 3 = 10. The mean is 10.
    9 + 10 + 11 = 30, y 30 ÷ 3 = 10. La media es 10.
  2. Find each distance from 10: for 9 it is 1, for 10 it is 0, for 11 it is 1.
    Encuentren cada distancia a 10: para 9 es 1, para 10 es 0, para 11 es 1.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
The distance is never negative (zero is allowed) — just how far away the number is.
  3. Average the three distances. What is the MAD, and what does it say about the player?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    1 + 0 + 1 = 2, and 2 ÷ 3 ≈ 0.67. A small MAD — the player is very steady.
    1 + 0 + 1 = 2, y 2 ÷ 3 ≈ 0.67.
