Unit 3: Ratios & Rates Lesson 3-8 6.AT.2

Solve Problems with Unit Rates

Resolver problemas con tasas unitarias

I can solve real-world problems by using unit rates to compare options.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my comparison using the words unit rate, better buy, per unit, and rate.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we solve real-world rate problems by finding the unit rate — the cost or amount for just 1 — and then using it.

Find the unit rate by dividing, then multiply it to find the amount you need.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

This math shows up in shopping, recipes, sports scores, speed, discounts, and comparing choices. It helps students decide what is fair, what is a better deal, and how quantities change together.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: Team 1 knows that 3 pounds of chicken cost $18. A rate compares two amounts with different units, like dollars and pounds.

Step 1 (Make it a Fraction): Write rate as a fraction with Cost on TOP ($18) and Pounds on BOTTOM (3): $18 / 3 pounds.

Step 2 (Divide Both by Bottom): Divide both parts by the bottom number: (18 ÷ 3) / (3 ÷ 3) = $6 / 1 pound. The unit rate is in fraction form over 1 ($6/1 pound = $6 per pound).

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • What is the amount for just 1? Let's divide to find it.
  • Now that we know the rate for 1, do we multiply or add to find the total?

Watch for: Listen for "tasa unitaria" (unit rate) — the rate written as a fraction over 1.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Find an amount per 1 unit and use it to compare choices or solve a problem.

Unit Rate Tasa unitaria

A rate for just 1 of something, like cost for 1 item.

Better Buy Mejor compra

The choice that costs less for each item.

Looking at two or more amounts to see how they are related.

For each single item.

Por cada artículo.

Rate Tasa

A ratio comparing two amounts with different units, like miles per hour.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

A car drives 100 miles in 2 hours. Find the unit rate, then find how far it goes in 4 hours.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Find the miles for 1 hour by dividing.
Encuentren las millas para 1 hora dividiendo.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    100 ÷ 2 = 50 miles per hour.
    100 ÷ 2 = 50 millas por hora.
  2. Now find how far in 4 hours by multiplying.
Ahora encuentren cuánto en 4 horas multiplicando.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    50 × 4 = 200 miles.
    50 × 4 = 200 millas.
  3. Check together: does the answer make sense for 4 hours?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
4 hours is double 2 hours, so 200 miles is double 100 miles. It fits.
Coincide.
