Unit 4: Arcade Builder Lesson 4-1 6.AT.4

Understand Percent

I can explain a percent as a rate per 100, model it on a decimal grid or tape diagram, and interpret percents greater than 100%.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain what a percent means using the words per hundred, part, whole, and equivalent ratio.

What Your Child Is Learning

In this lesson, students practice how to explain a percent as a rate per 100, model it on a decimal grid or tape diagram, and interpret percents greater than 100%. They learn to show their thinking with numbers, pictures, words, or a model. The goal is not just getting an answer. Students should be able to explain why the answer makes sense.

Why This Matters

This math shows up in shopping, recipes, sports scores, speed, discounts, and comparing choices. It helps students decide what is fair, what is a better deal, and how quantities change together.

What It May Look Like In Class

Your child may use the interactive lesson, guided notes, examples from the board, partner talk, and short practice problems. They may be asked to solve, draw a model, label important numbers, and explain their reasoning in a sentence.

How You Can Help At Home

You do not need to teach a new method. Ask your child to read the problem out loud, circle the important numbers, and explain what they tried first. Helpful questions include: What do you know? What are you trying to find? Does your answer make sense?

Key Vocabulary

Understand Percent Comprender el porcentaje

A percent is a ratio that compares a number to 100, so every percent answers the question “how many out of 100?”

Example: 65 shaded squares out of a 100-square grid is 65%

Percent Porcentaje

A ratio that compares a number to 100. The word means “per hundred,” and the symbol is %.

Example: 9 out of 100 students walk to school → 9%

Per hundred Por cada cien

The meaning hidden inside the word percent: for every group of 100. It is why every percent can be written as a fraction over 100.

Example: 3 out of every 10 rewritten as 30 out of 100

Decimal grid Cuadrícula decimal

A 10-by-10 grid of 100 squares. Shading squares shows a percent directly, one square per percent.

Example: A 100-square grid with 65 squares shaded

Part-to-whole Parte a todo

A comparison of one part against the whole amount. In a percent, the whole is always 100%.

Example: 18 students out of a class of 60

Greater than 100% Mayor que 100 %

More than one whole. A percent above 100 means the amount is larger than the thing it is being compared to.

Example: 150% of the gray kitten's weight

Try It Together

Pick one or two problems. Let your child explain the first step before opening the answer.

  1. There are 2 red tiles for every 3 blue tiles. Write the ratio of red to blue.
    Show answer

    2:3

  2. A pack of 4 pens costs $8. What is the cost for 1 pen?
    Show answer

    $2

  3. What is 25% of 40?
    Show answer

    10

  4. A recipe uses 3 cups of flour for 12 cookies. How much flour for 24 cookies?
