What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we find a percent of a number, like a discount on a price. We change the percent to a decimal and multiply.

The whole amount is the base. The piece you take is the part. The word "of" means multiply. So: change the percent to a decimal, then multiply by the base.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

This math shows up in shopping, recipes, sports scores, speed, discounts, and comparing choices. It helps students decide what is fair, what is a better deal, and how quantities change together.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: a claw machine is 25% off its 60-ticket price. We want the discount (the part).

The base is 60, because the discount is 25% OF 60.

Change the percent to a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25.

Cambia el porcentaje a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • What number comes after the word "of"? That is the base we multiply by.
  • What is this percent written as a decimal?

Watch for: Listen for "base" (the whole) — it is the number that comes right after the word "of."

    40 ÷ 100 = 0.40, luego 0.40 × 80.
  3. Check together: 40% is a little less than half, so should 32 be a little less than 40?
