Unit 6: Expressions Lesson 6-14 6.AT.7

The Distributive Property

La propiedad distributiva

I can use the distributive property to expand and factor expressions.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my steps using the words distributive property, factor, expand, and equivalent.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we learn the distributive property. It lets us multiply a number by everything inside the parentheses, one piece at a time.

The number outside the parentheses must be "shared" with every term inside. So a(b + c) = a × b + a × c. Do not multiply only the first part.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

Expressions and equations help students describe patterns and missing numbers. This matters for planning, budgeting, games, coding, and solving everyday questions step by step.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: each concert bundle has a ticket ($15) and a snack ($5). For 3 bundles we can write 3(15 + 5).

One way: add inside the parentheses first. 15 + 5 = 20, then 3 × 20 = 60. The total is $60.

Una forma: sumar primero dentro del paréntesis. 15 + 5 = 20, luego 3 × 20 = 60. El total es $60.

Other way: share the 3 with each part. Multiply 3 × 15 = 45 and 3 × 5 = 15.

Otra forma: repartir el 3 con cada parte. Multiplica 3 × 15 = 45 y 3 × 5 = 15.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • Did the outside number reach both parts inside the parentheses?
  • Let's draw an arrow from the outside number to each part.

Watch for: Listen for "propiedad distributiva" — it means share the outside number with each part inside.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

The Distributive Property La propiedad distributiva

Multiply a factor by every term inside parentheses.

Distributive Property Propiedad distributiva

Multiplying a number by everything inside the parentheses: a(b + c) = ab + ac.

Factor Factor

A factor of a whole number divides it evenly, with no remainder. For example, 3 is a factor of 12 because 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Expand Desarrollar

To multiply out the parentheses in an expression.

Equivalent Equivalente

Expressions that always have the same value.

Expresiones que siempre tienen el mismo valor.

Coefficient Coeficiente

The number in front of a letter, like the 3 in 3x.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Stay at the studio, but use a simpler bundle: 2 bundles, each with an $8 ticket and a $3 snack. That is 2(8 + 3).

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Share the 2 with each part. Multiply 2 × 8 and 2 × 3.
    Repartan el 2 con cada parte. Multipliquen 2 × 8 y 2 × 3.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    2 × 8 = 16 and 2 × 3 = 6.
    2 × 8 = 16 y 2 × 3 = 6.
  2. Now add the two pieces: 16 + 6. What is the total?
Ahora sumen las dos partes: 16 + 6. ¿Cuál es el total?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    16 + 6 = 22, so 2(8 + 3) = 22.
    16 + 6 = 22, así que 2(8 + 3) = 22.
  3. Check together: add inside first instead. 8 + 3 = 11, then 2 × 11. Do you get 22 again?
    Revisen juntos: sumen primero adentro. 8 + 3 = 11, luego 2 × 11. ¿Da 22 otra vez?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
2 × 11 = 22, the same answer, which proves both ways work.
