Unit 6: Expressions Lesson 6-2 6.NOS.1

Division Expressions with Fractions and Mixed Numbers

I can divide a fraction by a fraction and divide with mixed numbers by multiplying by the reciprocal.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain the steps using the words reciprocal, improper fraction, mixed number, and simplify.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we divide with mixed numbers like 2 1/2. The trick: turn the mixed number into one simple fraction first, then divide the same way as always.

Write any mixed number as one fraction first (2 1/2 = 5/2), then Keep, Change, Flip and multiply.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

Expressions and equations help students describe patterns and missing numbers. This matters for planning, budgeting, games, coding, and solving everyday questions step by step.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: we have 2 1/2 cups of rice, and our scoop holds 1/2 cup. How many scoops is that? That question is 2 1/2 ÷ 1/2.

FIRST, make the mixed number ONE fraction. Multiply the whole number by the bottom, then add the top: 2 × 2 + 1 = 5. So 2 1/2 = 5/2. It makes sense: 2 whole cups hold four halves, plus one more half is five halves.

Now Keep, Change, Flip: KEEP 5/2 the same, CHANGE ÷ to ×, and FLIP 1/2 upside down to make 2/1. The new problem is 5/2 × 2/1.

Ahora Mantén, Cambia, Voltea: MANTÉN 5/2 igual, CAMBIA ÷ por ×, y VOLTEA 1/2 para hacer 2/1. El nuevo problema es 5/2 × 2/1.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • What do we do first when we see a mixed number like 2 1/2?
  • Which fraction gets flipped — the first one or the second one?

Watch for: First convert every mixed number to an improper fraction; keep the numbers in their original order. Nothing gets flipped until each number is a single fraction.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Divide Fractions Dividir fracciones

Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.

Dividend Dividendo

The total number being divided into equal groups (the number inside the division bracket).

Divisor Divisor

The number of equal groups you are dividing into (the number outside the division bracket).

A fraction turned upside down.

Una fracción volteada de arriba abajo.

Quotient Cociente

The answer when you divide.

La respuesta cuando divides.

Simplify Simplificar

To write a fraction with smaller numbers that names the same amount, like 2/4 = 1/2.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Warm up with plain fractions, then try one with a mixed number. First: half a pizza, and each slice is 1/4 of the whole pizza. How many slices are in the half? Solve 1/2 ÷ 1/4.

Resuelvan 1/2 ÷ 1/4.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Keep 1/2. Change ÷ to ×. Flip the second fraction 1/4 to make 4/1.
Mantengan 1/2. Cambien ÷ por ×. Volteen la segunda fracción 1/4 para hacer 4/1.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
Keep the first fraction exactly as it is — only flip the second.
  2. Multiply across, then simplify. How many 1/4 slices are in the half pizza?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2, and 4/2 = 2. So 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 2 slices.
    1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2, y 4/2 = 2. Entonces 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 2 rebanadas.
  3. Now one WITH a mixed number: 1 1/2 ÷ 1/2. Turn 1 1/2 into one fraction first, then Keep, Change, Flip. What do you get?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    1 × 2 + 1 = 3, so 1 1/2 = 3/2. Then 3/2 × 2/1 = 6/2 = 3.
    1 × 2 + 1 = 3, así que 1 1/2 = 3/2. Luego 3/2 × 2/1 = 6/2 = 3.
