Unit 8: Equations & Inequalities Lesson 8-4 6.AT.9

Write and Represent Inequalities

Escribir y representar desigualdades

I can write inequalities to represent real-world situations.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my inequality using the words inequality, greater than, less than, and at least / at most.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we write inequalities. An inequality compares two amounts with the signs <, >, ≤, or ≥, when many values are allowed instead of just one.

'At least' means ≥ and 'at most' means ≤; 'more than' means > and 'fewer/less than' means <.

Español

Esta noche escribimos desigualdades. Una desigualdad compara dos cantidades con los signos <, >, ≤ o ≥, cuando se permiten muchos valores en lugar de uno solo.

'Al menos' significa ≥ y 'a lo más' significa ≤; 'más que' significa > y 'menos que' significa <.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

Expressions and equations help students describe patterns and missing numbers. This matters for planning, budgeting, games, coding, and solving everyday questions step by step.
Las expresiones y ecuaciones ayudan a describir patrones y números desconocidos. Son útiles para planear, presupuestar y resolver problemas paso a paso.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real clue: 'The suspect is at least 18 years old.' We let a stand for the age.

Pista real: 'El sospechoso tiene al menos 18 años.' Usamos a para representar la edad.

Think about what the phrase allows. 'At least 18' means 18 is allowed AND any number bigger.

Piensa en lo que permite la frase. 'Al menos 18' significa que 18 está permitido Y cualquier número mayor.

Choose the symbol. Because 18 itself is included, we use ≥ (greater than or equal to).

Elige el símbolo. Como el 18 mismo está incluido, usamos ≥ (mayor o igual que).

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • What is the key phrase — 'at least,' 'at most,' 'more than,' or 'fewer than'?
  • Is the exact number allowed? That tells us if we use the line under the symbol.

Watch for: Listen for "inequality" (desigualdad) — a sentence that compares with <, >, ≤, or ≥, not a single answer.

Pregunte a su estudiante

  • ¿Cuál es la frase clave — 'al menos,' 'a lo más,' 'más de' o 'menos de'?
  • ¿Está permitido el número exacto? Eso nos dice si usamos la línea debajo del símbolo.

Preste atención: Escucha la palabra "desigualdad" — una oración que compara con <, >, ≤ o ≥, no una sola respuesta.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Write Inequalities Escribir desigualdades

Represent a range of possible values with <, >, ≤, or ≥.

Representar un rango de valores posibles con <, >, ≤ o ≥.

Inequality Desigualdad

A math sentence that compares two sides with <, >, ≤, or ≥.

Una oración matemática que compara dos lados con <, >, ≤ o ≥.

Greater than Mayor que

The > sign, showing one number is bigger.

El signo >, que muestra que un número es mayor.

Less than Menor que

The < sign, showing one number is smaller.

El signo <, que muestra que un número es menor.

At least / At most Al menos / A lo más

'At least' means ≥. 'At most' means ≤.

'Al menos' significa ≥. 'Como máximo' significa ≤.

Variable Variable

A letter that stands for a number that is unknown or can change.

Una letra que representa un número desconocido o que puede cambiar.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Detective Navarro has a new clue: 'A bag holds fewer than 10 items.' Write the inequality together.

La detective Navarro tiene una nueva pista: 'Una bolsa tiene menos de 10 objetos.' Escriban juntos la desigualdad.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint. / Deje que su estudiante explique primero y después abra una pista.

  1. Pick a letter for the unknown. Let n be the number of items.
Elijan una letra para la incógnita. Que n sea el número de objetos.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
The phrase 'fewer than' is the key part to read.
La frase 'menos de' es la parte clave que hay que leer.
  2. Is 10 itself allowed? Which symbol fits, and what is the inequality?
¿Está permitido el 10 mismo? ¿Qué símbolo corresponde, y cuál es la desigualdad?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    'Fewer than 10' does NOT include 10, so use <: n < 10.
    'Menos de 10' NO incluye el 10, así que usen <: n < 10.
  3. Check together: name some numbers that fit n < 10.
Revisen juntos: nombren algunos números que cumplan n < 10.
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
9, 8, 7, and down all work; 10 does not.
    9, 8, 7 y menos sirven; el 10 no.
