Tonight we solve an inequality and then graph it. We get the letter alone the same way as an equation, but the answer is a range of values.

Solve with the inverse operation, then graph the solution set: open circle for < or >, closed circle for ≤ or ≥.

Real example: solve and graph x + 3 > 53 (the suspect withdrew more than $50, plus a $3 fee).

Use the inverse operation. The opposite of adding 3 is subtracting 3: x + 3 − 3 > 53 − 3, so x > 50.

Graph it. The symbol > does not include 50, so draw an open circle at 50 and shade right.

Ask your student

  • What is being added or subtracted? Use the opposite to get x alone.
  • Look at the symbol now: does it include the boundary number — open or closed circle?

Watch for: Listen for "substitute" (sustituir) — it means putting a number in for the letter to check it works.

  1. Solve it. What undoes subtracting 5, and what does x have to be?
