Model: Area of the planter is 4 × 2 = 8 square feet (how many plants fit); volume is 4 × 2 × 1 = 8 cubic feet (how much soil to buy). — A strong answer names area (4 × 2 = 8 square feet, a flat surface) and volume (4 × 2 × 1 = 8 cubic feet, a filled space) and explains why one is squared and one is cubed.
