📖 What we're learning tonightQué aprendemos hoy

English

Tonight we solve a puzzle by starting SMALL — tracing simple cases until a pattern rule appears.

Key words
  • puzzle
  • pattern
  • pattern rule

  • If they get stuck, ask:Si se atora, pregunten: Which piece of your work shows how your thinking has grown?¿Qué trabajo muestra cómo ha crecido tu razonamiento?
  • Try not to say:Eviten decir: Just try to solve the big one directly.Solo trata de resolver el grande directamente.

🎯 The big ideaLa idea principal

In one sentence: When a problem is too big to solve directly, solve the smallest version, then the next, and watch what happens between them. In the Tower of Hanoi the moves go 1, 3, 7, 15, 31 — each one is DOUBLE the previous, plus one.

We start withEmpezamos con Real example: the Tower of Hanoi. Ejemplo real: la Torre de Hanói.
We end withTerminamos con Use the rule to predict: four discs take 7 × 2 + 1 = 15 moves, and five take 15 × 2 + 1 = 31. Usa la regla para predecir: cuatro discos toman 7 × 2 + 1 = 15 movimientos, y cinco toman 15 × 2 + 1 = 31.

Organiza los resultados en una tabla: 1, 3, 7.

  3. SolveResuelveStep 3Paso 3

Look for the rule between the rows: 1 doubled is 2, plus 1 is 3.

    More detailMás detalle

    And 3 doubled is 6, plus 1 is 7.

    Y 3 duplicado es 6, más 1 es 7.

  4. CheckRevisaStep 4Paso 4

    Use the rule to predict: four discs take 7 × 2 + 1 = 15 moves, and five take 15 × 2 + 1 = 31.

    Usa la regla para predecir: cuatro discos toman 7 × 2 + 1 = 15 movimientos, y cinco toman 15 × 2 + 1 = 31.

Watch for these (3)Ten en cuenta (3)
  • 👀

Listen for "pattern rule" (regla del patrón) — the sentence that says how to get from one term to the next.

  • ➕

Double AND add one. Answering 14 for four discs, or 30 for five, means the "plus one" was forgotten.

  • ✋

A table is the tool that makes the rule visible. Ask your student to organize before predicting.

Rushing to compute an answer without drawing or visualizing the problem first.
