Tonight we find the volume of a box. Volume is how much space fits inside. We multiply the three edges: length, width, and height.

Real example: a time capsule box is 6 long, 4 wide, and 3 tall.
We use the rule: volume = length × width × height.
Usamos la regla: volumen = largo × ancho × altura.
Put in the numbers: volume = 6 × 4 × 3.
Pon los números: volumen = 6 × 4 × 3.
Multiply two of them first: 6 × 4 = 24.
Multiplica dos primero: 6 × 4 = 24.
Now multiply by the last one: 24 × 3 = 72.
Ahora multiplica por la última: 24 × 3 = 72.
So the volume is 72 cubic units. We say "cubic" because the space fills 3 directions.
Así que el volumen es 72 unidades cúbicas. Decimos "cúbicas" porque el espacio llena 3 direcciones.
Listen for "volumen" — it means how much space fits inside the box.

Why:Por qué: Statements about layers of cubes — counting 4 layers of 6, adding up the cubes in every layer, and stacking layers until the box is full — describe filling the prism cube by cube. The other three (using V = length × width × height, multiplying the three edge lengths, and computing 6 × 5 × 2 = 60) use the formula, which is a shortcut for that same layer count.

You cannot use the formula before you know which number is the length, width, and height, and the answer only comes after both multiplications are done.Los pasos van así: identificar l = 8, w = 5, h = 3; escribir V = l × w × h; multiplicar 8 × 5 = 40; multiplicar 40 × 3 = 120; y decir V = 120 in³. Why:Por qué: The original 3 × 4 × 5 box holds 60 cubic units. Doubling the length gives 6 × 4 × 5 = 120, doubling the width gives 3 × 8 × 5 = 120, and doubling the height gives 3 × 4 × 10 = 120 — every row doubles the volume, because doubling one factor doubles the whole product no matter which factor you pick.

Why:Por qué: Bin A: 8 × 6 × 5 = 240 in³. Bin B: 9 × 4 × 7 = 252 in³. Bin B holds 12 in³ more.Caja A: 8 × 6 × 5 = 240 in³. Caja B: 9 × 4 × 7 = 252 in³. La Caja B guarda 12 in³ más.

Compare the volume numbers, not the edge lengths. A long skinny box can hold less than a short wide one.
Start here: Find each prism's volume first — multiply all three measurements — then sort those volumes from least to greatest.
Sort these rectangular prisms from LEAST volume to GREATEST volume.

Why:Por qué: Sorting from least to greatest volume gives 27, 40, 60, 72, then 160, so the order is 3 × 3 × 3, 10 × 2 × 2, 5 × 4 × 3, 6 × 6 × 2, 8 × 5 × 4. You compare the product on each card, not the individual edges — 10 × 2 × 2 has the longest edge but is only the second smallest box.

Since volume = base area × height, divide the volume by the base area to work backward to the height.
Start here: You know the volume (72 in³) and the base (6 in by 4 in). Only the height is unknown.
A box has a volume of 72 in³. Its base is 6 in by 4 in. What is its height?Una caja tiene un volumen de 72 in³. Su base mide 6 in por 4 in. ¿Cuál es su altura?

Why:Por qué: Height = V ÷ (l × w) = 72 ÷ (6 × 4) = 72 ÷ 24 = 3 in.Altura = V ÷ (l × w) = 72 ÷ (6 × 4) = 72 ÷ 24 = 3 in.
