Tonight we divide mixed numbers, like 3 1/2. First we change each mixed number into an improper fraction, then we divide with Keep, Change, Flip.
For the grown-up helping tonightPara el adulto que ayuda hoy
1½ ÷ ¼ = 6
Real example: a route is 3 1/2 miles long, cut into 1/4-mile segments.
We want 3 1/2 ÷ 1/4 — how many segments are there?
Queremos 3 1/2 ÷ 1/4 — ¿cuántos segmentos hay?
Change 3 1/2 into an improper fraction.
Cambia 3 1/2 en una fracción impropia.
Multiply the whole by the bottom: 3 × 2 = 6. Add the top: 6 + 1 = 7. So 3 1/2 = 7/2.
Multiplica el entero por el de abajo: 3 × 2 = 6. Suma el de arriba: 6 + 1 = 7. Entonces 3 1/2 = 7/2.
Now Keep, Change, Flip: keep 7/2, change ÷ to ×, flip 1/4 to 4/1.
Ahora Mantener, Cambiar, Invertir: mantén 7/2, cambia ÷ por ×, voltea 1/4 a 4/1.
Multiply: 7/2 × 4/1 = 28/2.
Multiplica: 7/2 × 4/1 = 28/2.
Simplify: 28/2 means 28 ÷ 2 = 14.
Simplifica: 28/2 significa 28 ÷ 2 = 14.
So 3 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 14 segments.
Entonces 3 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 14 segmentos.

Why:Por qué: Each row walks the same method, so you only finish and simplify the last column: 28/2 = 14, 14/4 = 3 1/2, 42/21 = 2, and 105/15 = 7. Notice the quotients are larger than the mixed numbers you started with, because dividing by a fraction less than 1 asks how many small pieces fit inside.

Why:Por qué: To rewrite a mixed number, multiply the whole by the denominator and add the numerator, keeping the same denominator: 1 3/4 = (1 × 4 + 3)/4 = 7/4, 2 2/3 = 8/3, 4 1/2 = 9/2, and 3 1/5 = 16/5. The denominator never changes because you are just counting how many of those same-size pieces the whole number is worth.

Why:Por qué: Decode each case-file number with whole × denominator + numerator: 5 1/4 = 21/4, 2 3/5 = 13/5, 3 1/6 = 19/6, and 4 2/3 = 14/3. The denominator on the match always equals the denominator on the mixed number, which is a fast way to narrow the choices.

Why:Por qué: The equation is 5 1/4 ÷ 3/4, so convert 5 1/4 = (5 × 4 + 1)/4 = 21/4, then the reciprocal shortcut: 21/4 × 4/3 = 84/12 = 7 pieces.
