Tonight we divide with mixed numbers like 2 1/2. The trick: turn the mixed number into one simple fraction first, then divide the same way as always.
For the grown-up helping tonightPara el adulto que ayuda hoy
1½ ÷ ¼ = 6
Real example: we have 2 1/2 cups of rice, and our scoop holds 1/2 cup.
How many scoops is that? That question is 2 1/2 ÷ 1/2.
¿Cuántas medidas son? Esa pregunta es 2 1/2 ÷ 1/2.
FIRST, make the mixed number ONE fraction.
Multiply the whole number by the bottom, then add the top: 2 × 2 + 1 = 5. So 2 1/2 = 5/2. It makes sense: 2 whole cups hold four halves, plus one more half is five halves.
Now Keep, Change, Flip: KEEP 5/2 the same, CHANGE ÷ to ×, and FLIP 1/2 upside down to make 2/1.
Ahora Mantén, Cambia, Voltea: MANTÉN 5/2 igual, CAMBIA ÷ por ×, y VOLTEA 1/2 para hacer 2/1.
The new problem is 5/2 × 2/1.
El nuevo problema es 5/2 × 2/1.
Multiply straight across and simplify: 5 × 2 = 10 on top, 2 × 1 = 2 on the bottom.
Multiplica de lado a lado y simplifica: 5 × 2 = 10 arriba, 2 × 1 = 2 abajo.
10/2 = 5. Five scoops! Check it: five 1/2 cups really do fill 2 1/2 cups.
10/2 = 5. ¡Cinco medidas!
First convert every mixed number to an improper fraction; keep the numbers in their original order. Nothing gets flipped until each number is a single fraction.
Only the SECOND fraction (the one you divide by) gets flipped. The first one never changes.
A whole number works the same way: write 3 as 3/1 first, then Keep, Change, Flip.

Solve with Keep, Change, Flip, check by multiplying, and explain why the answer is greater than 1.Un circuito para caminar en el parque mide 3/8 de milla.
3/4 ÷ 3/8 = 3/4 × 8/3 = 24/12 = 2 loops. Check: 2 × 3/8 = 6/8 = 3/4. The answer is greater than 1 because 3/4 is bigger than 3/8, so more than one loop fits.3/4 ÷ 3/8 = 3/4 × 8/3 = 24/12 = 2 vueltas. Comprueba: 2 × 3/8 = 6/8 = 3/4.

Why:Por qué: The middle column has already done Keep, Change, Flip, so the last column is only the simplifying step: 6/2 = 3, 12/4 = 3, 6/3 = 2, and 20/8 = 2 1/2. Every quotient is more than 1 because each dividend holds more than one copy of its divisor.La columna del medio ya hizo Conserva, Cambia, Voltea, así que la última columna es solo el paso de simplificar: 6/2 = 3, 12/4 = 3, 6/3 = 2 y 20/8 = 2 1/2. Why:Por qué: Dividing asks how many copies of the divisor fit inside the dividend. In 3/4 ÷ 1/4, 5/6 ÷ 1/3, and 2/3 ÷ 1/6 the dividend is larger, so more than one copy fits and the quotient passes 1; in 1/4 ÷ 1/2, 1/3 ÷ 2/3, and 2/5 ÷ 4/5 the divisor is larger, so only part of a copy fits and each quotient is 1/2.Dividir pregunta cuántas copias del divisor caben dentro del dividendo. En 3/4 ÷ 1/4, 5/6 ÷ 1/3 y 2/3 ÷ 1/6 el dividendo es mayor, así que cabe más de una copia y el cociente pasa de 1; en 1/4 ÷ 1/2, 1/3 ÷ 2/3 y 2/5 ÷ 4/5 el divisor es mayor, así que solo cabe parte de una copia y cada cociente es 1/2.

Why:Por qué: Keep, Change, Flip gives 5/6 × 3/1 = 15/6 = 5/2, 4/9 × 3/2 = 12/18 = 2/3, and 7/8 × 2/1 = 14/8 = 7/4. Why:Por qué: A quotient is a whole number only when the divisor fits into the dividend an exact number of times. 3/8 ÷ 1/8 = 3, 5/8 ÷ 1/8 = 5, and 1/2 ÷ 1/8 = 4 count whole eighth-size pieces, while 7/10 ÷ 1/5 = 7/2, 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/2, and 1/3 ÷ 2/3 = 1/2 each end with a leftover part of a piece, so those codes stay fractions.

Is 3/4 ÷ 1/2 the same as 1/2 ÷ 3/4? Solve both and explain why or why not. What does this tell you about the order in division?¿Es 3/4 ÷ 1/2 lo mismo que 1/2 ÷ 3/4?

Why:Por qué: 3/4 ÷ 1/2 becomes 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 1 1/2, while 1/2 ÷ 3/4 becomes 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6 = 2/3, so the two expressions are not equal. Swapping the dividend and the divisor flips the quotient to its reciprocal, which shows that division is not commutative — order matters.3/4 ÷ 1/2 se convierte en 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 1 1/2, mientras que 1/2 ÷ 3/4 se convierte en 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6 = 2/3, así que las dos expresiones no son iguales.
