📖 What we're learning tonightQué aprendemos hoy

English

Tonight we SOLVE an inequality first, then graph its solution set — and the shading follows the SOLVED symbol, not the original.

Key words
  • Solve and Graph Inequalities
  • Solve
  • Graph

  • Resolver y representar desigualdades
  • Resolver
  • Graficar

  • If they get stuck, ask:Si se atora, pregunten: Which values make your statement true? Does the boundary work?¿Qué valores hacen verdadera tu afirmación? ¿Sirve el valor límite?
  • Try not to say:Eviten decir: Shade the direction the original problem pointed.

🎯 The big ideaLa idea principal

In one sentence: Solve an inequality exactly like an equation: use inverse operations on both sides until the variable is alone. Then graph what you SOLVED — ">" and "≥" shade right toward greater numbers, "<" and "≤" shade left. Check the direction after solving, never before.

InequalityDesigualdad x + 3 > 10 → x > 7 45678910 open · 7 not included Greater than → shade to the RIGHT →
An open circle means "not equal to that number." Shade every number that works.
  1. Set upPlanteaStep 1Paso 1

Real example: a detective can spend at most $85 on gas and has already spent $52.

    More detailMás detalle

How much more can she spend?

    ¿Cuánto más puede gastar?

  2. ModelModelaStep 2Paso 2

Let g = the additional amount.

Sea g = la cantidad adicional.

    More detailMás detalle

    "At most" gives ≤, so write 52 + g ≤ 85.

    "A lo más" da ≤, así que escribe 52 + g ≤ 85.

  3. SolveResuelveStep 3Paso 3

    Subtract 52 from both sides: g ≤ 33.

    Resta 52 de ambos lados: g ≤ 33.

  4. CheckRevisaStep 4Paso 4

Graph the SOLVED inequality: a closed circle at 33 with the arrow pointing left.

    More detailMás detalle

And g cannot be negative, so the useful range is 0 to 33.

Watch for these (3)Ten en cuenta (3)
  • 👀

Listen for "solution set" (conjunto solución) — every value the shading covers, not just the boundary.

  • ➡️

Shade based on the SOLVED symbol. Solving x + 4 > 10 to x > 6 and then shading left is the classic slip.

  • ✋

Test one shaded value and one unshaded value in the ORIGINAL inequality — that catches a backwards graph instantly.

WHY THIS MATTERS¿POR QUÉ IMPORTA?

Engineers design theme park rides with inequalities! 'Height h ≥ 48 inches' means exactly 48 inches or taller can ride. Speed governors use 'speed s ≤ 65 mph' to keep every turn thrilling yet safe.

Forgetting whether the boundary number itself is included (> vs ≥).

💬 Parent Coach Question:Pregunta de guía: Ask: 'Is there a line underneath the symbol? Does it say greater than, or greater than or equal to?' Pregunta: '¿Tiene una línea abajo el símbolo? ¿Dice mayor que, o mayor o igual que?'
